New Delhi: India’s Smart Border Project is set to become one of the country’s biggest technology-driven border security missions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the government will soon launch the project to make the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh “impenetrable” using advanced surveillance systems and modern technology.
The announcement was made during the Border Security Force (BSF) Investiture Ceremony and Rustamji Memorial Lecture in New Delhi.
What Is the Smart Border Project?
The Smart Border Project is a high-tech security initiative planned for nearly 6,000 km of India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The project will use:
- Drones
- Radars
- Smart surveillance cameras
- AI-based monitoring systems
- Thermal imaging devices
- Sensor-based tracking systems
According to the government, these technologies will help detect illegal infiltration, smuggling activities, drone threats, and suspicious movements in real time.
Government’s Main Objective Behind Smart Border Project
The Centre said the project aims to:
- Strengthen national security
- Stop illegal infiltration
- Improve border surveillance
- Reduce cross-border crimes
- Support BSF operations with technology
Home Minister Amit Shah said India must prepare for modern security threats including:
- Cyber threats
- Hybrid warfare
- Drone-based attacks
He added that traditional border protection methods alone are no longer enough.
Technology Will Play a Major Role
Reports suggest the Smart Border Project will create a 24×7 electronic surveillance network across border regions.
Expected features include:
- AI-powered cameras that can identify humans, animals, vehicles, and drones
- Infrared and thermal cameras for night surveillance
- Real-time command and control centres
- Satellite and fibre-optic communication systems
- Automated alert systems for security forces
The project is expected to expand India’s existing Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS).
BSF to Get Stronger Support
The government believes the new system will make the work of the Border Security Force easier and faster.
Officials said smart technologies will:
- Improve response time
- Reduce human error
- Increase monitoring efficiency
- Help track infiltration routes more effectively
Amit Shah also stressed stronger coordination between BSF, local police, and administration to identify illegal infiltration networks.
Why Smart Border Project Matters
India shares sensitive borders with both Pakistan and Bangladesh. Border security has remained a major concern due to:
- Illegal infiltration
- Smuggling
- Cross-border terrorism
- Drone activities
- Human trafficking
The Smart Border Project is being seen as a major strategic move to modernize India’s border management system using advanced defence and surveillance technologies.
Expected Timeline
The government said work is progressing rapidly and the Smart Border initiative is expected to roll out within the next year.
