New Delhi: India’s proposed Pralay export variant is drawing major attention as reports suggest the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing a 300-kilometre-range version of the tactical missile system for possible export to Armenia.
The move could significantly strengthen Armenia’s long-range precision strike capability while also boosting India’s growing defence export ambitions.
Reports indicate that bilateral defence discussions between New Delhi and Yerevan have reached an advanced stage.
What is the Pralay Missile?
Pralay missile is an Indian tactical quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile developed for precision strikes against high-value enemy targets.

What are the Features of Pralay Missile
- Surface-to-surface tactical missile
- Developed by DRDO
- Uses solid-fuel propulsion
- Capable of high-speed manoeuvring
- Designed to evade enemy missile defence systems
- Can target:
- Airbases
- Radar stations
- Communication centres
- Military infrastructure
- Supply depots
The missile follows a quasi-ballistic trajectory instead of a standard ballistic path, making interception more difficult.
Why the Pralay Export Variant is Limited to 300 km
Reports say the export model under development will have:
- Maximum range of 300 km
- Payload limit of 500 kg
These restrictions are important because India is a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), which limits exports of missile systems exceeding certain payload and range thresholds.
The export clearance would also need to comply with India’s SCOMET regulations governing strategic and dual-use technologies.
Why Armenia Wants the Pralay Export Variant
Armenia has been modernising its military rapidly after recent regional conflicts with Azerbaijan.
According to reports, Armenia wants advanced precision-strike systems to counter Azerbaijan’s long-range strike capabilities, including the Israeli-made LORA missile system.
If acquired, the Pralay missile could provide Armenia with:
- Faster strike response
- Improved battlefield deterrence
- Better survivability against air defence systems
- Precision attack capability at long distances
India-Armenia Defence Ties Growing Rapidly
India and Armenia have strengthened defence cooperation in recent years.
Earlier defence deals reportedly included:
- Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher rocket systems
- Swathi weapon-locating radars
- Akash missile system air defence systems
India has emerged as one of Armenia’s important defence suppliers amid changing geopolitical conditions in the region.
Strategic Importance for India
A successful Pralay export deal would be highly important for India’s defence industry.
Major Benefits for India
- Strengthens India’s image as a defence exporter
- Expands indigenous missile exports
- Increases global confidence in Indian weapons systems
- Supports the “Make in India” defence initiative
- Enhances India’s geopolitical influence
It would also mark one of the most advanced Indian tactical missile systems offered for export.
