New Delhi: General Dhiraj Seth has officially taken over as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired on June 30, 2026, after more than four decades of distinguished military service. The leadership transition marks an important moment for the Indian Army as it continues its focus on modernization, operational readiness, and future warfare capabilities.

General Upendra Dwivedi retired after serving as the 30th Chief of the Army Staff. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening India’s operational preparedness across all theatres.

The Indian Army maintained a strong security posture along the Northern Borders through Operation Snow Leopard.   • Bhairav Battalions
  • Ashni Drone Platoons
  • Shaktibaan Regiments

These reforms aimed to improve combat capability and prepare the Army for future security challenges.

Better Coordination Among Armed Forces

General Dwivedi strongly promoted greater cooperation among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He consistently supported joint planning, integrated operations, and theatre-oriented warfare. In his farewell remarks, he said future wars will increasingly require all three services to work together closely.

Welfare of Soldiers Remained a Priority

The outgoing Army Chief also placed special attention on the welfare of serving soldiers, veterans, Veer Naris, and their families. He introduced initiatives to strengthen support systems and continued programs like the Veterans Achievers Award to recognize the contributions of former servicemen.

Long-Term Vision for National Security

General Dwivedi guided the development of Strategic Security Guidelines 2047, inspired by Viksit Bharat Vision 2047 and the Armed Forces Vision 2047.

He succeeds General Upendra Dwivedi and brings nearly four decades of military experience across operational, strategic, and institutional roles. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986.

Throughout his career, General Seth has commanded formations at every level. His important appointments include:

  • Commanding an Armoured Regiment in the Desert Sector
  • Leading an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre
  • Commanding a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu & Kashmir
  • Commanding the Sudarshan Chakra Corps
  • Serving as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area
  • Leading both the South Western Command and Southern Command

He is among the few officers to have commanded two operational Army Commands.
