New Delhi: India’s S-400 air defence system is set to get a major upgrade as Russia has shipped the fourth unit, expected to arrive by mid-May 2026. This development comes at a crucial time for India’s defence preparedness.

The S-400 air defence system has already proven its strength in recent operations, and the new delivery will further enhance India’s ability to counter aerial threats. Officials confirm that the system is currently en route and will be deployed soon after arrival.

India-Russia S400 Deal: Fourth S-400 System on the Way

According to defence sources, the fourth S-400 missile system has already been shipped from Russia after completing pre-dispatch checks by Indian Air Force officials. It is expected to reach an Indian port by mid-May 2026.

This delivery comes just around the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, where the S-400 system played a key role in protecting Indian airspace from aerial threats.

Shorter delays were reported earlier due to global supply chain disruptions linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but deliveries are now back on track.

India-Russia S400 Deal: Deployment Likely in Western Sector

Sources suggest that the fourth S-400 unit will likely be deployed in Rajasthan or nearby western sectors.

This region is strategically important due to its proximity to Pakistan. The deployment will significantly strengthen India’s multi-layered air defence shield.

Fifth S-400 System Coming Soon

India is expected to receive the fifth and final S-400 system by November 2026 under the existing agreement with Russia.

This final unit will complete India’s initial order of five squadrons signed in 2018, valued at around ₹35,000–₹40,000 crore.

What Makes S-400 So Powerful

The S-400 is one of the world’s most advanced air defence systems.

  • Can track targets up to 600 km away
  • Can destroy threats up to 400 km range
  • Capable of intercepting fighter jets, missiles, and drones
  • Works as a multi-layered defence shield

Its performance during recent conflicts has highlighted its importance in India’s defence strategy.
