New Delhi: India’s Zorawar Light Tank project, one of the country’s most important indigenous defence programs, may face a delay of up to two years after the Indian Army demanded enhanced protection against enemy fire.
The project, jointly developed by DRDO and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), was originally expected to enter service around 2027. However, new survivability requirements could push induction closer to 2028-29 or beyond.
What Is the Zorawar Light Tank?
The Zorawar Light Tank is India’s first indigenous light battle tank designed specifically for:
- High-altitude warfare
- Mountain operations
- Rapid deployment in border regions
- Operations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)

The project was launched after the India-China border tensions in Eastern Ladakh highlighted the need for highly mobile armored platforms capable of operating in mountainous terrain.
The tank is intended to counter China’s Type-15 light tank deployment in Tibet and nearby regions.
Why Is the Project Facing Delays?
According to defence officials, the Indian Army has asked developers to increase the protection level of the tank beyond the originally planned standards.
Key Reasons Behind the Delay
- Higher armor protection requirements
- Need for redesign of certain vehicle components
- Additional testing and validation
- Balancing protection with mobility
- Weight management challenges
Defence experts note that increasing armor protection inevitably adds weight. For a light tank designed for mountain warfare, maintaining mobility is as important as improving survivability. This creates a difficult engineering challenge for developers.
Technical Challenge: Protection vs Mobility
One of the biggest concerns is preserving the tank’s core advantage—agility.
Army Wants:
- Better protection against enemy fire
- Improved battlefield survivability
- Enhanced crew safety
Developers Must Ensure:
- High mobility in mountainous terrain
- Ability to operate at high altitude
- Air transportability
- Fast deployment capability
Adding armor without significantly increasing weight requires advanced materials, design modifications, and extensive testing. Defence analysts believe this could become the most critical phase of the project.
Zorawar Light Tank: Current Development Status
The Zorawar program has already achieved several milestones:
- Prototype unveiled by Larsen & Toubro
- Development trials completed
- Mobility testing conducted
- High-altitude trials initiated
- Army evaluation process underway
The tank was developed within an unusually short timeline and has been showcased as a major achievement under India’s defence indigenisation efforts.
Zorawar Light Tank: Expected Induction Timeline
Original Timeline
- Planned induction: Around 2027
Revised Timeline
- Possible induction: 2028-29 or later
- Additional delay: Up to 2 years
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi recently indicated that the service expects induction around 2028-29 after issues identified during development and trials are addressed.
