INS Sahyadri Arrives In Japan For Exercise Malabar 2026

The Indian Navy’s indigenous guided-missile stealth frigate INS Sahyadri arrived at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan on November 4, 2026. The ship reached Japan to participate in the multilateral naval exercise Malabar 2026.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) welcomed the Indian warship with a ceremonial reception. Vice Admiral Yagi Koji, Commandant of Yokosuka District, and R Madhu Sudan, Deputy Chief of the Indian Mission in Japan, attended the event.

Malabar 2026 brings together the naval forces of four countries: India, Japan, the United States and Australia. The exercise aims to improve coordination, strengthen operational cooperation and allow naval personnel to exchange professional knowledge.

What Is Exercise Malabar 2026

Exercise Malabar is a major international naval exercise that focuses on improving cooperation between participating countries. It includes activities in both harbour and open-sea environments. The exercise will take place in two main phases:

1. Harbour Phase

During the harbour phase, naval personnel will take part in professional discussions, operational planning and knowledge-sharing activities.

These interactions help participating navies understand each other’s procedures and improve coordination before moving to sea operations.

2. Sea Phase

The sea phase will involve INS Sahyadri operating alongside naval units from the United States, Japan and Australia.

The activities are designed to improve teamwork, operational readiness and the ability of different navies to work together during complex maritime situations.

The exercise is also expected to strengthen mutual trust and support a safe and stable Indo-Pacific region.

INS Sahyadri Completes India-South Korea Naval Exercise

Before reaching Japan, INS Sahyadri participated in the India-Republic of Korea Navy bilateral exercise at Busan, South Korea.

The Indian warship arrived at Busan on October 26, 2026. During the harbour phase, naval personnel participated in professional discussions, operational briefings, cross-deck visits and expert-level exchanges.

The activities also included cultural and sporting events to improve relations between the two navies.

During the sea phase, INS Sahyadri and South Korea’s destroyer ROKS Munmu the Great conducted coordinated navigation, helicopter operations and joint manoeuvres.

These activities helped both countries improve maritime cooperation and operational interoperability.

Indian Navy’s Growing Global Deployment Activities

INS Sahyadri’s participation in Malabar 2026 is part of a wider series of international naval engagements undertaken by the Indian Navy.

Over recent months, Indian naval ships have participated in exercises and maritime activities across different regions.

Exercise Varuna With France

INS Trishul participated in Exercise Varuna with the French Navy. The exercise provided opportunities for both navies to improve cooperation through coordinated maritime operations.

Exercise Konkan-26 With The United Kingdom

INS Trishul also participated in Exercise Konkan-26 with the Royal Navy near Plymouth in the United Kingdom.

The deployment included further professional engagement and training with European naval forces.

IBSAMAR With Brazil And South Africa

INS Tarkash participated in the India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime Exercise (IBSAMAR) in South Africa.

The exercise focused on maritime security activities, including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare and anti-piracy operations.

Exercise INDRA-2026 With Russia

INS Sahyadri also participated in Exercise INDRA-2026 with the Russian Navy in Vladivostok.

The exercise provided another opportunity for India and Russia to strengthen their naval cooperation.

These international activities show how India is using regular naval engagements to build professional relationships and improve operational coordination with different countries.

What Is India’s MAHASAGAR Vision

MAHASAGAR stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

It represents India’s approach to improving maritime cooperation, regional security and shared economic growth.

The vision focuses on building stronger relationships with partner countries and encouraging cooperation across different maritime regions.

Through international naval exercises, port visits and professional exchanges, India aims to improve trust and cooperation with other maritime nations. The participation of Indian warships in exercises across Asia, Europe and Africa supports this wider approach.
