Delhi Police have questioned an IAS officer and an IPS officer as part of an ongoing investigation into an extortion case, sources revealed. The questioning occurred in mid-January, and the police have filed their first chargesheet in the matter. Authorities confirmed the development, but declined to provide further details, describing the case as “sensitive.”
The case dates back to 2022, when two gym trainers, arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from an elderly man and his family in Maurya Enclave, northwest Delhi, posed as officials from government offices. The accused allegedly accused the victim of running an illegal borewell on their property and attempted to extort money from them. The victim’s family alerted local police and the PCR, initiating a probe into the matter.
While out on bail, the accused allegedly contacted officers, including the area SHO, asking for their intervention. Investigations revealed that the two accused had called the officers for assistance and had established personal connections with them. During their examination, the officers acknowledged knowing the accused men and their phone conversations but denied any further involvement in the extortion attempt, according to police statements.
The chargesheet notes that the accused posed as officials from the SDM’s office and the joint commissioner of police’s office to intimidate the complainant into paying money. The investigation also indicates that the accused misused their connections with the IAS and IPS officers to further their scheme.
“Based on the investigation so far, sufficient evidence has been gathered to charge the accused with offences under IPC sections 170, 385, 509, and 34,” the chargesheet stated. Police have indicated that further inquiries are ongoing and are expected to lead to a supplementary chargesheet. This will likely include the findings from a vigilance inquiry into the involvement of the officers.
The SDM, who has been made a witness in the case, clarified that the accused were not associated with his office, refuting any claims of affiliation with the government department.
The investigation into the case continues, as Delhi Police gather more information to determine the full extent of the accused individuals’ activities and any potential misconduct by the officers involved.
