Delhi Police Sets the Stage: All-Women Pipe Band and Marching Contingent Take Center Stage

80 percent of the participants this year hail from the northeastern states, aligning with Delhi Police's recruitment policy aimed at bridging the gap between the police force and the people of the northeastern region

In a significant stride towards gender equality and women empowerment, the Delhi Police is set to showcase an all-women contingent marching down the Kartavya Path during the upcoming 75th Republic Day parade on January 26.

This historic moment marks the first time in the force’s history that the marching contingent will solely comprise women personnel. Notably, 80 percent of the participants this year hail from the northeastern states, aligning with Delhi Police’s recruitment policy aimed at bridging the gap between the police force and the people of the northeastern region.

Leading the way will be a woman IPS officer, Shweta K Sugathan, at the helm of the marching contingent, which consists of 194 female head constables and constables. These participants, all taking part in the parade for the first time, diligently practice daily at the Kartyava Path.

Special Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) Robin Hibu highlighted the excitement among the participants, emphasizing that they represent the northeastern states in the Delhi Police. The force takes pride in this achievement, considering the contingent’s origin from the armed unit, with a significant majority hailing from the northeastern states.

Adding another feather to its cap, the Delhi Police will feature a women’s pipe band led by Constable Ruyangunuo Kense, comprising 135 head constables and constables who will play the “Delhi Police Song.”

Last year witnessed the introduction of a female-dedicated pipe band in the parade, but this year’s band will be led by a female officer, distinguishing it further. Officials anticipate that the all-women marching contingent will undoubtedly be a focal point of attention during the parade.

In line with the defense ministry’s directive from the previous year, urging the inclusion of women participants in Republic Day parade contingents, bands, and tableaux, the Delhi Police is embracing this progressive step. Notably, the Delhi Police’s marching contingent holds a unique distinction, having participated in every Republic Day parade since India’s inception as a Republic on January 26, 1950.
