Chennai: In a step towards strengthening prisoner rehabilitation and post-release employment opportunities, Tamil Nadu Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Sandeep Rai Rathore, an IPS officer of 1992 batch, inaugurated a T-shirt manufacturing unit at Central Prison-I, Puzhal, on Wednesday.
The initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department’s rehabilitation and skill development programme, aimed at equipping inmates with market-relevant vocational skills that can help them secure employment and reintegrate into society after completing their sentences.
Partnership with Rotary International
The vocational training unit has been established in collaboration with Rotary International District 3234.
The partnership is intended to provide inmates with hands-on training in garment manufacturing, enabling them to acquire practical skills in one of India’s largest employment-generating sectors.
Officials said the programme will help prisoners gain industry-relevant experience while serving their sentences, thereby improving their chances of finding lawful employment after their release.
Focus on Rehabilitation Through Skill Development
Addressing the gathering during the inauguration, Sandeep Rai Rathore highlighted the importance of vocational education in prison reforms.
He said the Tamil Nadu prison system houses more than 22,000 inmates across 125 prisons, making rehabilitation and skill development a critical component of correctional administration.
According to Rathore, vocational training not only enhances employability but also plays a significant role in helping former inmates lead productive and law-abiding lives after their release.
Practical Garment Manufacturing Experience
The Director General said the newly inaugurated T-shirt manufacturing unit would provide inmates with commercial garment manufacturing skills while offering practical work experience during their incarceration.
He noted that exposure to real-world production processes would strengthen inmates’ technical abilities and improve their employment prospects upon re-entering society.
The initiative aligns with the broader objective of transforming prisons into centres of correction and rehabilitation rather than mere places of confinement.
Strengthening Prison Reforms
The establishment of the garment manufacturing unit reflects the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department’s continued focus on rehabilitation-based correctional practices.
By providing vocational training and work opportunities inside prisons, the department aims to reduce recidivism, encourage self-reliance among inmates and facilitate their successful reintegration into society.
The new unit at Central Prison-I, Puzhal, is expected to contribute to these objectives by creating a structured learning environment where inmates can develop practical skills that remain valuable beyond their prison term.
