Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday chaired a high-level conference of IAS and IPS officers at Namakkal Kavignar Maligai in the State Secretariat, reviewing law and order, women’s safety, anti-drug initiatives and the implementation of government welfare schemes. The conference, being held just over a month after the TVK-led government assumed office, marks the first major administrative review under the new government.
The two-day conference has brought together the state’s top civil and police leadership, including Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal, departmental secretaries, District Collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), Range Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Inspectors General (IGs), and senior officials of the Forest Department.
First Major Administrative Review After Formation of TVK Government
The conference is significant as it comes shortly after the new government assumed office and is aimed at reviewing governance across 28 government departments.
Chief Minister Vijay directed that the conference be conducted in three separate sessions to facilitate detailed discussions on administration, policing, welfare implementation and environmental governance.
The first session, held on Monday, involved District Collectors and senior police officers and focused primarily on public safety, policing and district administration.
Law and Order, Women’s Safety Among Top Priorities
During the review, Chief Minister Vijay held extensive discussions with IAS and IPS officers on maintaining law and order across the state.
Officials reviewed several policing issues, including:
- Women’s safety and security
- Prevention of chain-snatching and street crimes
- Accountability and transparency in police functioning
- Strengthening intelligence gathering
- Execution of pending arrest warrants
- Monitoring habitual offenders, rowdies and accused persons released on bail
- Prevention of caste-based clashes and communal disturbances
The Chief Minister also reviewed measures being taken to improve policing efficiency and ensure faster response to emerging law-and-order challenges.
Special Review of Women’s Safety Initiatives
Women’s safety received special attention during the conference.
Officials presented updates on:
- Functioning of the Singappen Special Task Force
- Investigation and disposal of POCSO cases
- Cyber crimes targeting women and children
- Preventive measures to improve public safety for women
The Chief Minister reviewed ongoing initiatives and stressed the need for effective implementation of measures aimed at protecting women and children across the state.
Drug-Free Tamil Nadu Initiative Reviewed
A separate session was devoted to the Drug-Free Tamil Nadu initiative.
Officials reviewed:
- Anti-drug awareness campaigns in schools and colleges
- Enforcement against narcotics trafficking
- Crackdown on illicit liquor
- Action against the sale of banned tobacco products
- Coordination among enforcement agencies
The discussions focused on strengthening preventive measures while ensuring strict enforcement against drug-related offences.
Focus on Public Health and Welfare Schemes
Apart from policing, the Chief Minister also reviewed public health initiatives and district-level implementation of government welfare schemes.
Officials discussed the progress of various flagship programmes and examined whether benefits intended under different departmental schemes were reaching eligible beneficiaries effectively.
The review also covered the government’s long-term Vetri Tamilagam vision plan and district-level governance performance.
Three-Session Conference Planned
The two-day conference has been structured into three sessions:
First Session
The opening session brought together District Collectors and senior police officers to discuss:
- Law and order
- Women’s safety
- Public health
- Drug-Free Tamil Nadu campaign
- District administration
- Welfare scheme implementation
Second Session
The next session has been reserved exclusively for District Collectors.
Officials will assess:
- Delivery of welfare schemes
- Department-wise implementation status
- Administrative challenges
- Public service delivery
- District development priorities
Third Session
The final session will involve District Collectors and Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers.
The discussions will focus on:
- Forest conservation
- Environmental protection
- Wildlife management
- Sustainable development initiatives
Conference to Conclude with Awards
The conference will conclude with an address by Chief Minister Vijay.
According to reports, the Chief Minister is also expected to present awards and commendations to District Collectors, police officers and Forest Department officials who have delivered outstanding performance in governance, policing and environmental management.
The conference is expected to serve as a roadmap for strengthening governance, improving public service delivery and enhancing coordination among various departments under the new Tamil Nadu government.
