New Delhi: Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), along with six other entities, emerged as a successful bidder in the 12th round of commercial coal block auctions, which concluded on July 31, 2025. The auction process included three fully explored and four partially explored coal blocks, held under the aegis of the Ministry of Coal.

The seven awarded blocks hold a combined geological reserve of approximately 1,761.49 million tonnes, with a Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), excluding the partially explored ones. The auction saw robust competition, achieving an average revenue share of 26.70%, indicating strong private and public sector interest.

Projected Economic and Employment Impact

According to the Ministry, the seven blocks are expected to:

  • Generate annual revenue of ₹719.90 crore
  • Attract ₹787.50 crore in capital investment
  • Create approximately 7,098 direct jobs

These outcomes are part of a larger strategic push to increase domestic coal production and reduce dependency on imports.

Commercial Mining Milestone

Since the launch of commercial coal mining in 2020, India has successfully auctioned 131 coal blocks with a total production capacity of 277.31 MTPA. These auctions aim to unlock the untapped potential of coal-bearing regions while promoting ease of doing business in the mining sector.

Once operational, the collectively auctioned blocks are projected to:

  • Generate ₹39,359 crore in annual revenue
  • Attract capital investment worth ₹41,597 crore
  • Create over 3.74 lakh jobs across coal-rich regions

A Step Toward Energy Self-Reliance

The successful completion of the 12th auction round aligns with the government’s objective to make India self-reliant in coal production. By expanding commercial coal mining and encouraging private sector participation, the country aims to meet the rising energy demands of its industrial and power sectors.

The Ministry of Coal has reiterated its commitment to transparency, investment facilitation, and environmental sustainability in future auction rounds.
