New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s defence self-reliance, GE Aerospace IAF engine depot deal has been announced to support the Indian Air Force’s Tejas fleet. GE Aerospace will partner with the IAF to establish an in-country maintenance depot for F404-IN20 engines. This move is expected to reduce dependence on foreign repair centres and improve operational readiness of Tejas jets. The initiative aligns with India’s long-term goal of strengthening indigenous defence capabilities.

Details of GE Aerospace–IAF Deal

GE Aerospace has signed a contract with the Indian Air Force to set up a domestic depot facility for the F404-IN20 engine.

This facility will handle maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of engines used in Tejas aircraft.

The depot will be owned and operated by the Indian Air Force, while GE Aerospace will provide technical support.

Key Features of the Depot Facility

1. In-Country Maintenance

The biggest advantage is that India will no longer depend heavily on overseas repair centres. This will save time and cost.

2. Faster Turnaround Time

Engine repairs and servicing will be completed much faster, improving aircraft availability.

3. Technical Support from GE

GE Aerospace will provide:

  • Technical expertise
  • Training for IAF personnel
  • Support staff
  • Supply of spare parts and specialised equipment

Strategic Importance of GE Aerospace–IAF Deal

Boost to Indigenous Defence

This step strengthens India’s self-reliance in defence (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by building local capabilities.

Improved Combat Readiness

With faster repairs, more Tejas jets will be available for missions at any time.

Long-Term Partnership

This agreement reflects the long-standing partnership between GE Aerospace and the Indian Air Force.

Impact on Tejas Program

The Tejas aircraft is a key part of India’s defence strategy. Reliable engine support will:

  • Enhance operational efficiency
  • Reduce downtime
  • Support future Tejas variants

This development is crucial as India continues to expand its indigenous fighter jet program.
