New Delhi: India-Australia uranium supply pact is expected to reach a major milestone during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne, Australia. The long-awaited agreement could allow Australia to supply uranium for India’s civilian nuclear power programme. If signed, the deal will strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries and support India’s growing clean energy needs.

Details of India-Australia Uranium Supply Pact

India and Australia are preparing to finalise a commercial uranium supply agreement that has been under discussion for several years. The agreement follows the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, signed by both countries in 2014. Although the framework was ready years ago, commercial uranium exports were delayed because of technical safeguards linked to international nuclear non-proliferation rules. Those issues have now reportedly been resolved.

What is the Importance of India-Australia Uranium Supply Pact

India is rapidly increasing its nuclear power capacity to meet rising electricity demand while reducing carbon emissions. Australian uranium will be used only for India’s civilian nuclear energy programme under international safeguards. The fuel is expected to help India produce cleaner electricity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

PM Modi and PM Albanese Expected to Hold Key Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his visit. Apart from the uranium supply agreement, both leaders are expected to discuss defence cooperation, trade, investment, critical minerals, technology, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.

Official Confirmation

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that substantial discussions have taken place on the uranium supply agreement.

MEA Joint Secretary Vishwesh Negi said recent talks have been productive and expressed hope that the discussions would reach a logical conclusion during the Prime Minister’s visit.

How India-Australia Uranium Supply Pact Will Benefit India

The agreement is expected to provide India with a reliable source of uranium fuel for its expanding nuclear power sector. It will also support India’s long-term energy security, clean energy goals, and increasing electricity demand driven by industries, digital infrastructure, and data centres.

Stronger India-Australia Strategic Partnership

India and Australia have significantly expanded cooperation in recent years through trade, defence, education, and critical minerals.

The uranium supply pact would become another important milestone in the growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries and further strengthen bilateral ties.
