Bhopal: A major road infrastructure upgrade is set to transform connectivity in Madhya Pradesh as the Barwaha-Dhamnod State Highway-38 will be upgraded from a two-lane road to a four-lane highway.
The project has received approval in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on the proposal of the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC).
The ambitious project will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹2508.21 crore and aims to strengthen transportation facilities across the Nimar region. The government has set a target to complete the construction before Simhastha 2028.
63-Km Four-Lane Highway to Be Built Under Hybrid Annuity Model
The new four-lane road will cover approximately 63 kilometres and will be constructed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
The project will improve road connectivity between important locations, including:
- Barwaha
- Dhamnod
- Maheshwar
- Mandleshwar
- Omkareshwar
Once completed, the highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time and provide smoother movement of vehicles across the region.

Better Connectivity for Maheshwar, Omkareshwar and Religious Tourism
The new four-lane highway will provide major relief to lakhs of devotees visiting religious destinations such as Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, and Omkareshwar.
At present, the two-lane road faces heavy traffic pressure, especially during festivals and religious events. Congestion becomes a major challenge due to increasing movement of passenger vehicles and heavy transport vehicles.
After the completion of the four-lane road:
- Pilgrims will get safer and faster travel facilities
- Local residents will benefit from improved transport access
- Commercial vehicle movement will become easier
- Tourism activities are expected to receive a boost
Existing Road Conditions Create Travel Challenges
The current condition of the Barwaha-Dhamnod route has been a major concern for commuters.
Several sections of the road have developed:
- Large potholes
- Waterlogging issues during monsoon
- Poor road surfaces
Areas including Gandhi Nagar, Nandra, Piplya Buzurg, and Barwaha often face water accumulation during heavy rains, increasing accident risks and making travel difficult.
The damaged road has affected:
- Farmers
- Traders
- Students
- Daily commuters
The government also spends significant funds every year on repair work, but recurring damage during the rainy season continues to create problems.
Vehicle Speed Expected to Increase from 50 kmph to 100 kmph
After the four-lane highway becomes operational, vehicle movement is expected to become much faster.
Currently, vehicles generally travel at an average speed of around 40 to 50 kmph due to traffic congestion and poor road conditions.
With the new highway infrastructure, vehicles may be able to travel at speeds of nearly 100 kmph, resulting in:
- Reduced travel time
- Lower fuel consumption
- Better logistics movement
- Improved passenger convenience
Highway Will Connect Mumbai-Agra and Indore-Ichhapur Routes
The new four-lane highway will create stronger links with major transportation corridors.
The road will connect:
- Dhamnod with the Mumbai-Agra National Highway
- Barwaha with the Indore-Ichhapur Highway
This improved network will benefit:
- Long-distance travellers
- Freight transportation
- Agricultural businesses
- Local industries
- Regional trade activities
The project is expected to strengthen economic development across Dhar and Khargone districts.
Modern Infrastructure Features Planned Under Highway Project
The upgraded highway will include several modern safety and traffic management features.
The project plan includes:
- Around 10 bypasses
- 12 underpasses
- More than 30 small and large bridges
- Over 60 junction improvements
These facilities will improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure smoother vehicle movement.
Land Acquisition Near Completion, Construction to Begin Soon
According to officials, the project received approval in late 2025, and the land acquisition process has reached its final stage.
The highway will pass through both Dhar and Khargone districts:
- Around 5 km stretch from Dhamnod towards Maheshwar falls under Dhar district
- The remaining section will pass through Khargone district
The project is expected to play an important role in the development of both districts.
Four-Lane Highway to Boost Nimar Region’s Economy
The Barwaha-Dhamnod four-lane project is expected to become a major development milestone for the Nimar region.
Improved connectivity will support:
- Religious tourism
- Agriculture transportation
- Local businesses
- Industrial growth
- Regional economic activities
With better roads and modern infrastructure, the project aims to provide safer travel, faster connectivity, and new growth opportunities for Madhya Pradesh.
