New Delhi: In a significant development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Himanshu Kumar’s tenure as Joint Secretary (Director level) in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for an additional two years. The extension, which was confirmed in an order by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Wednesday, will keep Kumar in his current role until March 6, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Kumar, an Indian Telecommunications Service (ITS) officer from the 1998 batch, has been serving in the UPSC since March 2020. His role in the commission has seen him contribute significantly to its operations, with his tenure now extended for an additional period, ensuring continued leadership in the organization.
In another key administrative move, Bhuvnesh Kumar, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1995 batch of Uttar Pradesh, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
The DoPT’s order, also issued on Wednesday, announced that Mr. Bhuvnesh Kumar would assume the additional charge with effect from January 1, 2025. His term in this role is expected to last for six months or until a regular incumbent is appointed, whichever comes first.
Bhuvnesh Kumar, currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is now tasked with overseeing the critical responsibilities of UIDAI, the body responsible for implementing India’s Aadhaar project.
These administrative changes are expected to enhance the governance framework and ensure continuity in the leadership of key public sector organizations.
