New Delhi/Ahmedabad: The Central Government has inducted six Gujarat Police Service (GPS) officers into the Indian Police Service (IPS) through promotion, with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issuing the official notification on Thursday.
Among those promoted is Rajdeepsinh Nakum, currently serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Operations Group), Surat. The promotions have been made under the Indian Police Service (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1955, and the officers have been allocated to the Gujarat cadre.
According to the notification signed by Sanjeev Kumar, Under Secretary to the Government of India, all six officers will remain on probation for one year and will undergo the prescribed IPS induction training.
Six Officers Promoted to IPS
The six Gujarat Police Service officers inducted into the IPS are:
- Rajdeepsinh Nakum – Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Operations Group (Surat)
- Bharatkumar Rathod – Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad
- Praful Vania
- Rajeshkumar Parmar
- Kalpeshkumar Chavda
- Rakesh Desai – Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rajkot
The appointments have been made under Rule 9(1) of the Indian Police Service (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1955, and the officers have been allocated to the Gujarat cadre under the provisions of the Indian Police Service (Cadre) Rules, 1954.
Rajdeepsinh Nakum’s Career Journey
Rajdeepsinh Nakum, one of the newly inducted IPS officers, currently heads the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Surat as Deputy Commissioner of Police.
A native of Wadhwan in Surendranagar district, Nakum comes from an academic background. His father served as a drawing teacher in a government school in Lakhtar taluka.
Nakum pursued English Literature at Gujarat University and began his professional career as a government school teacher, serving for nearly three years.
He later joined the Gujarat High Court as a Deputy Section Officer, where he worked from 2006 to 2011, before entering the police service.
Following his induction into the Gujarat Police Service, he underwent probationary training in Anand district in 2013. During his career, he has served with the State CID Crime in Veraval and has also held postings in Dang (2016–2018) and Botad before being appointed as DCP, Special Operations Group, Surat in 2022.
Nakum is also the father of three children.
Promotion Comes Amid Ongoing High Court Proceedings
Nakum’s promotion comes at a time when his name figures as one of the respondents in a petition pending before the Gujarat High Court concerning the demolition of shanties at Nasir Nagar in Surat on May 30.
The petition, filed by 26 residents displaced by the demolition, alleges that personnel of the Surat Special Operations Group were present during the demolition drive.
Along with Nakum, several other senior police officials, including the newly appointed Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut, have also been named as respondents in the case.
When asked about the matter, Nakum declined to comment, stating that the issue is sub judice. However, he expressed happiness over his promotion to the IPS.
High Court Observations
Interestingly, Nakum’s induction into the IPS coincided with proceedings before the Gujarat High Court, where the court reportedly questioned the Surat Municipal Corporation, Surat Police and other authorities over alleged procedural lapses in carrying out the demolition exercise.
The demolition reportedly left more than 100 families homeless, and the High Court observed that due process was not followed before the action was undertaken.
The matter remains under judicial consideration.
Officers to Undergo IPS Training
As per the MHA notification, all six officers will undergo the mandatory induction training for the Indian Police Service while serving a one-year probation period before their appointments are regularised.
The promotions are part of the annual process of inducting eligible State Police Service officers into the IPS against the promotion quota.
