New Delhi: In a major step toward strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Narendra Modi has approved the development of a state-of-the-art ship repair facility in Vadinar, Gujarat.
The project is expected to significantly enhance India’s ship repair capacity while creating jobs and supporting long-term economic growth.
Major Investment to Strengthen Maritime Ecosystem
The project will be jointly implemented by Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited with an investment of ₹1,570 crore.
It aligns with the government’s ambitious maritime strategies, including Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Employment Generation and Economic Impact
The Vadinar ship repair project is expected to:
- Create around 290 direct jobs
- Generate approximately 1,100 indirect employment opportunities
Additionally, it will promote logistics, ancillary industries, and MSMEs, contributing to regional economic development.
Advanced Infrastructure and Strategic Location
Planned as a brownfield project, the facility will include:
- A 650-meter jetty
- Two large floating dry docks
- Workshops and modern marine infrastructure
Vadinar has been chosen due to its natural deep draft, proximity to major shipping routes, and closeness to key ports like Mundra Port and Kandla Port. This makes it an ideal hub for repairing large commercial and foreign-flagged vessels.
Addressing India’s Ship Repair Capacity Gap
Currently, India faces a shortage of facilities capable of repairing large vessels over 230 meters in length. The Vadinar center will:
- Enable repair of ships up to 300 meters long
- Reduce dependence on foreign shipyards
- Help save valuable foreign exchange
This development marks a crucial step in building a self-reliant maritime sector.
Boost to Skills and Local Industries
The project is also expected to drive:
- Skill development opportunities in marine engineering
- Growth of support services and small businesses
- Expansion of a robust maritime industrial ecosystem
Strengthening India’s Global Maritime Position
By expanding ship repair infrastructure, India aims to position itself as a global hub for maritime services. The Vadinar project will play a key role in achieving this goal while supporting sustainable economic growth. The approval of the Vadinar ship repair facility marks a transformative move for India’s maritime sector, reducing foreign dependency, generating employment, and reinforcing the country’s vision of becoming a leading global maritime power.
