Harsh Kumar Jain, a seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1993 batch, has been appointed as the new Ambassador of India to the Federated States of Micronesia, in addition to his current role as India’s Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines.
His new accreditation was announced by the Ministry of External Affairs today, further strengthening India’s diplomatic ties with the Pacific region.
The Federated States of Micronesia, an island nation situated in the western Pacific Ocean, is made up of over 600 islands and is divided into four states: Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk, and Yap. The country has strategic significance for India as both nations continue to deepen their cooperation in areas such as maritime security, sustainable development, and climate change resilience.
Ambassador Jain, who has been serving in Manila since 2020, brings decades of diplomatic experience to the role. His tenure has seen increased cooperation between India and the Philippines, particularly in the fields of trade, defense, and technology.
With his new concurrent accreditation, Mr Jain will represent India’s interests in Micronesia, manage bilateral relations, and oversee consular and diplomatic functions for Indian nationals in the region.
Micronesia, with its small population and vast maritime territory, has become an important partner for India in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). India’s growing engagement with island nations is seen as a strategic move to bolster cooperation on maritime security, climate change, and economic development, particularly in the face of rising challenges posed by climate threats in the Pacific.
