New Delhi: In a bid to revive the tradition of handwritten letters in an increasingly digital world, the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications partnered with IndiGo to launch a Digital Detox Campaign aboard selected flights on October 12.

Organised on Philately Day during National Postal Week, observed from October 9 to 15, the initiative encouraged air travellers to take a break from their digital devices and reconnect with family and friends through handwritten postcards.

The campaign brought together air travel and traditional postal communication, giving passengers an opportunity to express their thoughts on paper while travelling at 30,000 feet.

Postcards Replace Screens on Selected IndiGo Flights

As part of the initiative, passengers travelling on selected IndiGo flights received specially designed Digital Detox kits containing postcards.

Travellers were encouraged to use their time in the air to write personal messages to loved ones instead of spending it on digital devices. The campaign sought to make handwritten communication an engaging and meaningful experience during the journey.

The postcards featured iconic landmarks from the participating cities, giving the initiative a distinctive local touch.

Six Major Cities Connected Through the Campaign

The campaign involved passengers travelling across six major Indian cities:

  • Bengaluru
  • New Delhi
  • Hyderabad
  • Kolkata
  • Mumbai
  • Chennai

After completing their postcards, participating passengers could deposit them in specially placed India Post letter boxes at the arrival airports. India Post would then facilitate their onward delivery to the intended recipients.

The initiative combined the experience of air travel with the traditional postal network, allowing messages written during flights to reach loved ones through the regular mail system.

Digital Detox Campaign Promotes Mindfulness and Personal Connections

The campaign highlighted the value of stepping away from screens and making time for personal communication.

According to the Department of Posts, the initiative aimed to encourage:

  • Reduced screen time: Giving travellers an opportunity to take a break from digital devices.
  • Mindfulness: Encouraging passengers to slow down and put their thoughts into words.
  • Meaningful communication: Reviving the personal touch associated with handwritten letters.
  • Stronger human connections: Inspiring people to express their feelings to loved ones through personal messages.
  • One passenger described the experience as a welcome change from everyday digital communication, sharing that writing a postcard at 30,000 feet offered a quiet moment to put thoughts on paper for special people.

India Post Highlights the Enduring Value of Handwritten Letters

Through the initiative, the Department of Posts reaffirmed its commitment to promoting meaningful communication and highlighting the continuing relevance of postal services in the digital age.

The campaign was part of National Postal Week, which celebrates the role of postal services and their connection with people across the country.

By introducing postcards into the flight experience, India Post and IndiGo sought to demonstrate that even in a world dominated by instant messages and digital notifications, handwritten letters can still offer a personal way to stay connected.
