Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: India Post (Maharashtra Circle) and Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) have come together to launch a technology-based domestic gas meter reading service on a pilot basis in Mumbai.

The partnership aims to make the meter reading process more accurate, transparent, and convenient for customers. With this initiative, MGL’s more than 20 lakh (2 million) domestic customers are expected to benefit from a smoother and more reliable billing experience.

The collaboration combines the strong last-mile network of India Post with MGL’s expertise in urban gas utility management. Together, both organizations are working towards providing secure and citizen-friendly services at the doorstep of customers.

Official MoU Signing Ceremony Marks the Beginning of the Partnership

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed during a special ceremony attended by senior officials from both organizations.

The agreement was signed by:

  • Ms. Kaiya Arora, Postmaster General, Mumbai Region
  • Mr. Krishnan Selvapandian, Vice President, MGL

The event was held in the presence of Mr. Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, along with other officials and representatives from both organizations.

The signing marks an important step towards using digital technology and trusted public service networks to improve everyday utility services for residents of Mumbai.

India Post’s Last-Mile Network to Support Digital Meter Reading

Under this initiative, trained postmen and field personnel will use digital devices to collect gas meter readings directly from customers’ homes.

India Post’s extensive neighborhood presence will help ensure efficient coverage, while digital tools will make the entire process faster and more dependable.

The service is designed to provide:

  • Digital Data Collection: Field workers will record meter readings electronically at customer locations.
  • Real-Time Verification: Digital systems will help maintain accurate records and improve operational efficiency.
  • Better Customer Convenience: Residents will receive a more organized and reliable meter reading experience.

Photograph Verification to Improve Billing Accuracy

One of the key features of this project is photograph-based verification.

During each visit, field personnel will capture photographs of gas meter readings, creating a clear digital record. This step will help improve transparency and reduce the chances of billing-related disagreements.

The photo verification system will provide:

  • Accurate meter reading records
  • Better billing reliability
  • Easy verification of collected data
  • Increased customer trust

Pilot Project Begins Across Mumbai

The new service will initially be introduced as a pilot project in Mumbai. After reviewing the results and operational performance, both organizations may consider expanding the initiative to other areas.

This partnership represents an example of how traditional public service networks can adopt modern technology to meet changing urban needs.

By combining India Post’s trusted doorstep reach with MGL’s utility services, the initiative aims to create a more efficient and customer-focused system for gas meter management.
