New Delhi: The Indian Army QRSAM missile procurement is set to play a major role in strengthening India’s air defence network as the Indian Army plans to acquire nearly 1,000 Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM). 

The proposed procurement, valued at around ₹11,000–₹12,000 crore, is expected to significantly enhance protection for mechanised formations, military bases, and critical assets against aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other aerial threats. The QRSAM has been developed indigenously by DRDO in partnership with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

The Indian Army is reportedly moving forward with plans to procure around 1,000 QRSAM interceptors under a large-scale air defence modernization effort.

The order is expected to be placed with Bharat Dynamics Limited, India’s leading missile manufacturer. If approved, the acquisition will provide the Army with a substantial stockpile of indigenous air defence missiles for future operational requirements. The procurement reflects the growing importance of layered air defence systems in modern warfare, especially as drone threats and precision-guided weapons become more common on the battlefield.

What Is The QRSAM Missile System

The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) is an advanced mobile air defence system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The missile system is designed to detect, track, and destroy aerial threats while operating alongside fast-moving Army formations. It can perform “search on move,” “track on move,” and “fire on short halt” missions.

What are the Capabilities Of QRSAM Missile

The QRSAM can engage targets at ranges between 5 km and 30 km and can simultaneously engage multiple aerial threats. The system uses advanced AESA radars with 360-degree coverage, active radar seekers, inertial navigation systems, and two-way data links for high-precision interceptions.
