New Delhi: India’s push to enhance maritime security has taken a major step forward as the Indian Navy P-8I upgrade gains approval from the Defence Acquisition Council under the Ministry of Defence.

The plan includes acquiring six additional Boeing P-8I Neptune aircraft equipped with next-generation surveillance technology. This move is aimed at countering increasing submarine activity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), particularly from China, and strengthening India’s long-range maritime dominance.

Details of P-8I Aircraft Upgrade

The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the purchase of six additional P-8I aircraft at an estimated cost of ₹28,000 crore. With long-term maintenance, weapons packages, and advanced systems included, the overall deal could reach nearly $4 billion.

This expansion is not just about increasing fleet size. It represents a major technological leap in India’s maritime surveillance capability.

Advanced AAS Radar: A Game-Changer in Submarine Detection

The Indian Navy is in discussions to equip the new aircraft with the highly advanced AN/APS-154(V) Advanced Airborne Sensor (AAS) developed by Raytheon.

Unlike traditional radar systems, this cutting-edge technology introduces a new way of detecting submarines.

What are the Features of AAS Radar:

  • Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology
  • Mounted in a canoe-shaped pod under the aircraft
  • Capable of Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI)
  • Supports Maritime Moving Target Indication (MMTI)
  • Works effectively in all weather conditions

This allows the aircraft to scan vast ocean areas with unmatched accuracy.

How AAS Radar Detects Hidden Submarines

Traditional systems like the APY-10 radar and Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) rely on visible or near-surface submarine signatures.

However, the AN/APS-154(V) works differently.

It can:

  • Detect tiny disturbances on the ocean surface
  • Identify wake patterns caused by submerged submarines
  • Track vessels without requiring them to surface

This indirect detection method significantly reduces the stealth advantage of modern submarines.

What is the Importance of P-8I Aircraft Upgrade

The upgrade comes at a time when the Indian Ocean Region is witnessing increased activity from Chinese naval submarines and research vessels.

Key strategic benefits include:

  • Monitoring chokepoints like the Malacca Strait
  • Enhancing maritime domain awareness
  • Strengthening anti-submarine warfare capabilities
  • Ensuring real-time tracking during conflicts

This capability will help India maintain a strong presence across critical sea lanes.

Cost and Technology Challenges

While the AAS radar offers unmatched capabilities, it comes with high costs.

  • The advanced sensor significantly increases aircraft price
  • The system is highly classified and tightly controlled
  • Even the U.S. Navy uses it selectively

These factors contributed to delays in approval of the deal.

Role of COMCASA and Secure Data Sharing

The integration of such advanced technology requires coordination with the United States under the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA).

India is focusing on maintaining data sovereignty by:

  • Using indigenous systems like BEL Data Link II
  • Ensuring secure communication channels
  • Protecting sensitive intelligence data

This ensures operational independence while benefiting from advanced technology.

Transforming P-8I into ISR Powerhouse

With the addition of AAS radar, the P-8I aircraft will evolve beyond a patrol platform into a full Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) system.

Enhanced Capabilities:

  • High-resolution imaging
  • Real-time threat detection
  • Tracking of fast-moving targets
  • Multi-role operational flexibility

This will make the Indian Navy one of the most capable maritime forces in the region.
