New Delhi: Every year on 27 October, the Indian Army observes Infantry Day, also known as Shaurya Diwas, to celebrate and remember the vital role of its Infantry in defending the nation.

This date was chosen because on 27 October 1947, the first infantry units landed at Srinagar airport to repel the Pakistan-backed tribal invasion — a key moment in India’s defence history.

The 2025 commemoration marks the 79th observance of this day.

Infantry Day 2025: The Ceremony in Brief

On 27 October 2025 at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, laid a wreath at the Amar Chakra in honour of the Infantry personnel who sacrificed their lives in service of the nation.

Three decorated war-veterans laid wreaths on behalf of the Infantry veterans:

  • Major Ashish Sonal, Vir Chakra (Retd), veteran of Operation PAWAN (1990)
  • Subedar Major & Honorary Captain Kunwar Singh, Vir Chakra (Retd), participant in Operation MEGHDOOT (1989)
  • Lance Naik Amrit, Vir Chakra (Retd), who took part in Operation CACTUS LILY (1971)

Their presence reinforced the legacy of bravery, continuity and honour in the Infantry.

Infantry Day 2025: Nation-Wide Celebrations & Publications

Beyond Delhi, the day was marked with multiple activities across the country:

  • A memorial seminar in remembrance of Field Marshal KM Cariappa was held in Lucknow.
  • The “Shauryaveer Run” and felicitation of “Veer Naris” (brave wives of martyrs) at Delhi Cantonment.
  • Release of the Infantry Magazine, a special edition featuring the Infantry’s multi-dimensional capability development and heroic sagas.

Importance of Infantry Day

The Infantry is the backbone of the Indian Army’s war-fighting capability. Observing this day reinforces morale, pays tribute to past sacrifices, and reaffirms the readiness of the Infantry in a dynamic security environment.

By remembering the first landing at Srinagar in 1947, the ceremony emphasizes the infantry’s historical relevance in safeguarding India’s territorial integrity.

Furthermore, the release of the Infantry Magazine signals ongoing efforts to modernize, build multi-dimensional capabilities and adapt to future threats.

What This Means for Defence & Policy

The 79th Infantry Day event highlights that the Indian Army is continuing its legacy of honour while focusing on future readiness:

  • Recognition of veterans and fallen heroes boosts morale across ranks.
  • Public releases like the Infantry Magazine increase transparency and awareness of capability development.

Leadership under Gen Dwivedi is signalling continuity in modernising the Infantry and enhancing multi-domain readiness.

For defence analysts, this observance is a reminder of how institutional traditions and modern imperatives combine in India’s strategic posture.
