Jharkhand has cleared an ambitious healthcare infrastructure project that will see the establishment of a 2,800-bed multi-speciality teaching hospital and medical college at Nagri, near Ranchi. Backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Jharkhand Action for Generating Responsive and Inclusive Transformation in Health Infrastructure (JAGRITI) programme, the project is expected to expand access to quality healthcare while creating one of the state’s largest medical education centres.
The initiative will be executed by the Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation Limited on behalf of the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare. The Government of India has sought financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank for the project.
Two-Phase Development Plan
The proposed investment is estimated at around ₹4,563 crore and will be implemented in two stages.
During the first phase, a 1,400-bed teaching hospital will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹2,557.9 crore. The second phase will add another 1,400 beds with an investment of nearly ₹1,636.7 crore, taking the total capacity of the institution to 2,800 beds.
The expansion is expected to strengthen both patient care and medical training facilities in Jharkhand, helping address the growing demand for advanced healthcare services.
Medical Institute to Honour Shibu Soren
The upcoming institution is proposed to be named the Dishum Guru Shibu Soren Institute of Medical Sciences, in recognition of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren.
The new campus, often referred to as RIMS-2, will be constructed on nearly 100 acres of land owned by Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) in Kanke, about 10 kilometres from Ranchi.
Tender Process Underway
The Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation has already initiated the procurement process by issuing an ADB invitation for bids through its e-Procurement Cell.
According to the tender notification, bids for the project are scheduled to be opened on August 17, 2026. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve Jharkhand’s public healthcare infrastructure while creating additional opportunities for medical education and specialised treatment in the state.
