Ranchi: Ranchi witnessed a fresh spotlight on its growing fisheries sector as Agriculture Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey visited a modern fish farming project in the Ratu area, operated by young entrepreneurs. The visit highlighted how innovation and technology are reshaping aquaculture in the state.
A Closer Look at the Modern Fish Farming Model
During her inspection, the minister reviewed the advanced systems being used in the project, including tech-enabled fish production methods and an innovation-driven farming model developed by a group known as King Fisheries.
She appreciated the integrated approach, noting that combining modern technology with fish farming practices can significantly improve productivity and efficiency.

Government Focus: Jobs, Youth, and Rural Growth
Speaking on the occasion, Shilpi Neha Tirkey said that fisheries development has massive potential in Jharkhand. The state government is focusing on building a strong ecosystem that supports farmers and young entrepreneurs.
The aim is to generate more local employment and self-employment opportunities, especially in rural areas, by promoting modern aquaculture practices.
New Schemes to Strengthen the Sector
The minister also shared that the state has introduced several supportive initiatives in its current budget:
- The Biofloc Pond Scheme has been included to promote advanced fish farming techniques
- A Fish Market Shed Scheme has been launched to improve marketing and sales infrastructure for fish producers
These steps are expected to strengthen both production and distribution systems across the state.
Strong Growth in Fish Production
Jharkhand has recorded impressive growth in fisheries in recent years. According to the minister, fish production in 2025–26 has reached approximately 3.81 lakh metric tonnes.
The state has seen more than 40% growth in fish production, driven by improved infrastructure and better farming practices.
Reservoirs such as Chandil, Maithon, Tenughat, Konar, Massanjore, and Tilaiya are playing a key role through cage culture-based fish farming.
Officials Present During the Visit
The visit was attended by Fisheries Director Amarendra Kumar, along with several senior officials from the department, who discussed ongoing projects and future plans for the sector.
Jharkhand is steadily transforming its fisheries sector into a modern, tech-driven industry. With strong government support, new schemes, and youth-led innovation, the state is aiming to turn fish farming into a major engine of rural growth and employment.
