Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana high court has strengthened its judiciary with the appointment of two new permanent judges. Justice Harsimrat Singh Grewal and Justice Deepak Manchanda took oath as permanent judges in Chandigarh, helping reduce the number of vacant posts. However, despite these appointments, the High Court still has 10 judicial vacancies that need to be filled to improve the speed of justice delivery.
Details of Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Appointment
Acting Chief Justice Ashish Jitend Desai administered the oath of office to Justice Harsimrat Singh Grewal and Justice Deepak Manchanda on Monday in Chandigarh.
Both judges were previously serving as additional judges. After taking the oath, they officially became permanent judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The appointments were made following approval by the Central Government based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium.
Vacancies Reduced, But More Appointments Needed
With the appointment of these two judges, the number of vacant judicial posts in the High Court has come down. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has a sanctioned strength of 85 judges, but it is still functioning with fewer judges than approved. After the latest appointments, 10 judge posts remain vacant, highlighting the need for more appointments to reduce the burden of pending cases.
What is the Importance of Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Appointment
A higher number of judges can help the High Court hear more cases and reduce delays. The Punjab and Haryana High Court serves the states of Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Filling vacant positions is considered important for faster disposal of civil, criminal, and constitutional matters.
More Retirements Expected
Although two new permanent judges have joined, the High Court is expected to face further vacancies because some sitting judges are due to retire in the coming years. This means the appointment process will continue to be important to maintain the court’s working strength and improve the justice delivery system.
