Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has announced a major push to strengthen the state’s fisheries sector, stating that the implementation of the Integrated Fisheries Policy 2026 is expected to attract investments worth over ₹9,000 crore. The announcement was made during a review meeting of the Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department held at the Ministry in Bhopal.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the state must move towards self-reliance in fish seed production, while also expanding infrastructure, cold chain systems, and export networks.
Every District to Develop a Fish Hatchery
CM Yadav directed that at least one fish hatchery should be developed in every district to ensure easy availability of fish seed. He stated that local availability of fish seed will significantly boost fish production across the state.
He added that the government’s goal is to ensure that within the next two and a half years, Madhya Pradesh does not need to depend on external sources for fish seed procurement.

Over ₹9,000 Crore Investment Expected in Fisheries Sector
The Chief Minister highlighted that the fisheries sector is witnessing strong growth momentum under the new policy framework. More than 2,91,938 cage farming proposals have already been approved and work orders issued.
He noted that the sector is emerging as a major driver of rural income and employment generation in the state.
Push for Pearl Farming and Global Best Practices
CM Yadav also directed officials to promote pearl (moti) production in Madhya Pradesh. He instructed the department to study best practices from other states and implement them effectively.
He stressed the need for innovation and diversification within the fisheries sector to enhance income opportunities for fish farmers.
Infrastructure Development: Cold Chain and Export Focus
To support rising fish production, the Chief Minister called for the development of cold chain infrastructure and logistics systems. He also emphasized strengthening branding and export networks to ensure wider market access for fish products from the state.
Officials were instructed to prepare a comprehensive plan to promote fisheries-based trade and international exports.
Focus on River Rejuvenation and Aquatic Ecosystem
CM Yadav also highlighted the importance of river rejuvenation and aquatic ecosystem conservation. He called for inter-departmental coordination to protect aquatic life and improve water resource sustainability.
He further suggested expanding water-based eco-tourism activities as part of the state’s development strategy.
Madhya Pradesh Ranked High in Fisheries Development
During the meeting, officials informed that Madhya Pradesh has achieved notable progress in fisheries development:
- The state ranks second in India under the Inland Fisheries sector in the Fishermen Credit Card scheme
- Seoni district secured first place nationally in inland fisheries performance for 2023–24
These achievements reflect the growing strength of the fisheries ecosystem in the state.
High-Level Review Meeting Held in Bhopal
The review meeting was attended by senior officials including:
- Minister of Fisheries Welfare and Development Narayan Singh Pawar
- Chief Secretary Anurag Jain
- Department Secretary Swatantra Kumar Singh
- Other senior departmental officials
The discussion focused on accelerating policy implementation and improving fisheries infrastructure across the state.
With a strong focus on self-reliance, infrastructure development, and investment attraction, Madhya Pradesh is positioning itself as a major hub for inland fisheries in India. The government’s emphasis on hatcheries, pearl farming, and export-oriented growth is expected to significantly transform the sector in the coming years.
