Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has launched the “Somnath Swabhiman Cultural Yatra”, marking a major cultural and spiritual initiative aimed at strengthening India’s heritage, faith, and national pride. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai flagged off a special train from Raipur Railway Station, sending over 1,000 distinguished participants to the Somnath Jyotirlinga in Gujarat.
The Chief Minister described the Somnath Temple as a powerful symbol of India’s national pride, cultural glory, and spiritual faith, emphasizing its historic resilience through repeated destruction and reconstruction as a testament to the unwavering devotion of the people.
Over 1,000 Eminent Participants Join the Pilgrimage
More than 1,000 selected dignitaries from Chhattisgarh are part of this special journey. The group includes Padma awardees, nationally and state-recognized artists, writers, cultural figures, social workers, and public representatives.
Participants from various districts across the state expressed enthusiasm for being part of this unique cultural and spiritual initiative, which blends devotion with heritage celebration.
Sacred Offerings from Chhattisgarh to Somnath Jyotirlinga
A distinctive feature of the yatra is the ritual offering of sacred soil from Shiva temples of Chhattisgarh and holy river water at the Somnath Jyotirlinga. These symbolic offerings represent the spiritual unity between different regions of India and reinforce the cultural integration theme of the initiative.
The Chief Minister also offered prayers for the prosperity, peace, and happiness of Chhattisgarh during the event.
Somnath Swabhiman Festival to Continue Until June 26
Officials confirmed that the Somnath Swabhiman Festival will continue until June 26, featuring a series of cultural and spiritual programs. The objective of the festival is to connect citizens with India’s ancient traditions, religious heritage, and civilizational values.
The initiative is also aligned with the national observance of the Somnath Swabhiman celebrations being held from January 11, 2026, to January 11, 2027, under broader cultural commemorations at the national level.
Historical Significance of Somnath Temple Highlighted
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sai recalled the historic significance of the Somnath Temple. He noted that the temple has been destroyed multiple times by invaders but rebuilt repeatedly, reflecting the resilience of India’s civilizational faith.
He also paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a key role in initiating the reconstruction of the temple after India’s independence. The reconstructed temple was inaugurated 75 years ago by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Cultural Unity and National Integration at the Core
The Chief Minister stated that the journey is not merely a religious pilgrimage but a symbol of India’s cultural unity and national integration. By bringing together artists, intellectuals, and cultural representatives, the initiative aims to strengthen collective identity and pride in India’s heritage.
Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal also highlighted that the pilgrimage offers participants a deeper experience of India’s rich cultural traditions along with spiritual fulfillment.

Chief Minister Sai also met the pilgrims before departure and extended his best wishes, presenting them with traditional shawls as a gesture of respect.
