Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced an ambitious plan to transform the state into India’s “Milk Capital”, positioning dairy and animal husbandry as key pillars of the rural economy. The government has also unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at boosting milk production, improving livestock care, and increasing farmers’ income.
Dairy Sector to Drive Rural Economy Growth
CM Mohan Yadav said the state is working to strengthen dairy and animal husbandry as powerful engines of rural prosperity. He emphasized that milk production is not only a livelihood but also a pathway to economic self-reliance for farmers and cattle rearers.
Key focus areas include:
- Increasing milk production capacity
- Attracting private investment in dairy sector
- Creating rural employment opportunities
- Promoting innovation in animal husbandry

Government to Ensure Fair Milk Procurement
The Chief Minister announced that the state government will actively procure milk from farmers and ensure fair pricing.
He stated that:
- All milk from cows and buffaloes will be purchased
- Farmers will receive fair and timely payment
- Dairy income will be strengthened under “Kisan Kalyan Year” initiatives
Milk Production Target Raised to 50 Lakh Litres Daily
The state has already increased milk collection from 9 lakh litres to 12 lakh litres per day in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board. The new target is to scale this to 50 lakh litres per day.
Officials said this expansion will significantly boost the dairy economy and rural livelihoods.
‘Vridavan Gram’ Model to Boost Rural Development
The government is developing “Vridavan Gram” in every block to promote dairy-based rural development. These villages will focus on:
- Dairy production enhancement
- Livelihood generation
- Modern livestock management
This model aims to integrate every village into the mainstream development process.
Financial Support and Subsidies for Farmers
To encourage livestock entrepreneurship, the government has announced:
- ₹10 lakh subsidy for setting up 25-cow dairy units
- Increased cattle assistance from ₹20 to ₹40 per animal
- Financial support for modern dairy infrastructure
These measures are designed to promote self-reliant dairy businesses.
Expansion of Gaushalas and Veterinary Infrastructure
The state has constructed over 1,300 new gaushalas, currently supporting more than 5 lakh cattle.
Additional initiatives include:
- Launch of cattle ambulance (Gaushala-on-call service)
- Establishment of new veterinary hospitals
- Upgradation of animal care and wellness centres
- New facilities announced in Gwalior and Dabra
Gwalior Gaushala Model Sets Example
The Lal Tipara Gaushala in Gwalior has emerged as a model facility, housing over 10,000 cattle. It also produces:
- Organic fertilizer from cow dung
- Bio-CNG fuel
- Dairy and ghee-based products
This model supports self-sustainability in livestock management.
Focus on Livestock Improvement and Technology
The government is strengthening the dairy ecosystem through:
- Artificial insemination programs
- Vaccination and disease control
- Breed improvement initiatives
- Technology-driven dairy farming systems
Over 4,156 model villages are also working on livestock development programs.
Dairy Sector Emerging as Employment Generator
Officials said the dairy sector is becoming a major source of employment, especially in rural areas. With rising investment and government support, dairy farming is expected to create new livelihood opportunities for youth.
