Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Thursday flagged off the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Yatra 2026’ from Rani Kamlapati Railway Station in Bhopal, marking the launch of a special pilgrimage initiative aimed at promoting religious tourism, cultural heritage, and spiritual connectivity.

First-of-Its-Kind Rail Pilgrimage from Madhya Pradesh
This is the first time such a large-scale organised pilgrimage has been launched from Madhya Pradesh via rail.
The journey will take devotees from different parts of the state to the Somnath Temple in Gujarat, one of India’s most sacred Jyotirlingas.
Officials said the initiative aims to make religious travel more accessible and comfortable for devotees across the state.
Somnath Temple Symbol of Faith and National Pride
CM Mohan Yadav described the Somnath Temple as a symbol of:
- Sanatan culture
- National pride
- Spiritual awakening
He said the temple represents India’s civilisational strength and historical resilience, having survived multiple invasions while continuing to remain a major centre of faith.
Boost to Religious Tourism Under ‘Vikas and Virasat’ Model
The Chief Minister said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is moving forward on a “development with heritage” model.
He added that the government is actively promoting:
- Religious tourism infrastructure
- Pilgrimage connectivity through rail and helicopter services

This approach aims to combine economic development with cultural preservation.
Women Pilgrims Express Joy and Gratitude

They appreciated the government’s focus on making pilgrimage travel more accessible, especially for women.
Religious Tourism Boosting Local Economy
CM Yadav highlighted that the development of religious tourism is also strengthening local economies.
He cited examples like Ujjain’s Mahakal Lok, where the number of visitors has increased significantly, benefiting hotels, transport operators, shopkeepers, and small businesses.
Pilgrimages Strengthen National Unity
The Chief Minister said that pilgrimages are not just religious journeys but also help strengthen cultural unity and national integration.
When people travel across states, they understand different traditions and lifestyles, promoting harmony and unity in diversity.
Condemns Violence in Political Incident
During the event, CM Yadav also condemned the killing of a political leader’s aide in West Bengal, calling violence unacceptable in democracy and urging respect for democratic values.
A Step Toward Cultural Connectivity
The Somnath Swabhiman Yatra 2026 is being seen as an initiative that blends spirituality, cultural pride, and tourism development, while also strengthening inter-state cultural ties and promoting India’s rich heritage.
