Marrakech: The Tata WhAP 8×8 Armoured Vehicle has attracted attention at the Marrakech Airshow 2026 in Morocco after reports showed a Moroccan-built version fitted with Elbit Systems’ UT30 MkII unmanned turret. The new configuration combines India’s armoured vehicle engineering with advanced weapon technology.
The development also highlights the growing defence partnership between India and Morocco. Tata Advanced Systems has already established a WhAP 8×8 manufacturing facility in Morocco, marking an important step in India’s overseas defence manufacturing and export ambitions.
Marrakech Airshow 2026: Morocco-Built Tata WhAP 8×8 Makes Headlines
The Tata Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8 was reportedly displayed in a new combat configuration at the Marrakech Airshow, held from October 7 to 10, 2026.

Images published by defence news outlets showed the vehicle equipped with the UT30 MkII unmanned turret, which features a 30mm automatic cannon. This configuration could give the vehicle stronger firepower and improve its ability to support infantry during military operations. However, the complete specifications and operational status of this particular configuration have not been publicly confirmed in an official technical announcement.
Marrakech Airshow 2026: India-Morocco Defence Partnership Gains Momentum
On September 23, 2025, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) inaugurated its first overseas defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, in Morocco’s Casablanca region. The facility was established to manufacture the WhAP 8×8 armoured vehicle. The project is part of a defence partnership between India and Morocco aimed at strengthening local manufacturing, developing technical skills and creating jobs.
According to the Moroccan government’s announcement, the factory began with a target of sourcing 35% of its components locally, with plans to increase this share to 50% over time.
First WhAP Vehicles Delivered To Morocco
Tata Advanced Systems announced on December 24, 2025, that the first batch of WhAP 8×8 vehicles had been handed over to the Royal Moroccan Army. The delivery marked an important milestone for the programme and showed that the Berrechid facility had moved beyond its initial inauguration stage. The project also supports Morocco’s plans to develop its domestic defence industry and reduce dependence on imported military equipment.
What Is The Tata WhAP 8×8 Armoured Vehicle
The WhAP, or Wheeled Armoured Platform, is an armoured combat vehicle developed by Tata Advanced Systems in partnership with India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
It uses an eight-wheel configuration, commonly called 8×8. All eight wheels can contribute to vehicle mobility, helping it travel across different types of terrain. The platform is designed to transport soldiers while providing protection and supporting combat operations. Its design can also be adapted for different military roles, depending on the equipment and configuration selected by the customer.
Designed For Mobility And Protection
The WhAP family is designed to combine troop protection with battlefield mobility. Its amphibious design can also allow suitably equipped versions to travel through water.
The vehicle’s capabilities depend on the selected configuration, armour package and installed equipment. This flexibility makes the platform suitable for military forces seeking a common vehicle family for several operational requirements.
The Moroccan manufacturing programme brings these capabilities into a local production setting, supported by Tata’s engineering experience and cooperation with Moroccan industry.
UT30 MkII Unmanned Turret Adds More Firepower
The UT30 MkII is a configurable turret system developed by Israeli defence company Elbit Systems. It is designed to provide armoured vehicles with additional firepower without requiring the gunner to sit inside the turret.
According to Elbit Systems, the system can be configured for manned or unmanned operation. It also supports different weapon options, advanced sights and other equipment.
Its design aims to improve crew protection while allowing soldiers to operate weapons from inside the armoured vehicle.
30mm Cannon And Additional Weapon Options
Elbit Systems lists a 30mm main gun and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun among the UT30 MkII’s available weapon options. The turret can also support anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), depending on the selected configuration.
A coaxial machine gun is mounted alongside the main gun and can be used for different battlefield tasks. However, the weapons installed on any particular vehicle depend on the customer’s requirements and the final configuration. The presence of every optional weapon should not be assumed simply because the turret supports it.
How The Unmanned Turret Can Improve Crew Safety
An unmanned turret allows the crew to operate its weapons and observation systems from inside the protected hull rather than occupying an exposed turret position. This arrangement can help reduce the crew’s exposure to enemy fire during combat operations.
The UT30 MkII also offers advanced electro-optical sights and stabilised weapon systems. These features are designed to help crews observe targets and operate the weapon system, including while the vehicle is moving.
The actual level of protection and performance depends on the vehicle’s armour, equipment and the conditions in which it operates.
