New Delhi: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton met Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh in New Delhi on August 20 to discuss development, connectivity and infrastructure needs in Wokha district and other parts of the Northeast.
Patton, who holds the Home and Border Affairs portfolio, was accompanied by Wokha legislators Mhathung Yanthan, Y. Mhonbemo Humtsoe and Achumbemo Kikon.
Focus on Roads and Infrastructure
The delegation raised several infrastructure demands, including the proposal to declare the Wokha–Merapani road up to Golaghat as a National Highway and upgrade the Wokha–Bokajan road.
The representatives also sought infrastructure upgrades at Wokha district headquarters, including a District Office Complex, Multipurpose Market Complex, Stadium and approach roads. They highlighted problems caused by erosion and landslides that affect transportation and economic activity.
Human-Elephant Conflict Discussed
Human-wildlife conflict in Wokha was another key issue. The delegation highlighted crop damage, property losses and concerns over the safety and livelihoods of local communities affected by elephants.
Dr Jitendra Singh said such challenges require coordination between concerned agencies while protecting both local livelihoods and the region’s wildlife.

Northeast Connectivity Expands
Dr Singh said the Northeast has witnessed significant development in connectivity and infrastructure over the past 12 years.
He highlighted the expansion of roads, railways, airports, waterways and digital infrastructure, saying better connectivity is improving access to markets, healthcare, education and employment.
The number of operational airports in the Northeast has increased from 9 in 2014 to 17 in 2026, while around 90 regional air routes have been operationalised under the UDAN scheme.
The number of National Waterways in the region has also increased from one in 2014 to 20 in 2024.
Dr Singh said the improved infrastructure is helping position the Northeast as an important contributor to India’s economic growth and a gateway to the Act East policy.
Development Beyond Connectivity
The Union Minister said infrastructure should translate into better livelihoods, investment, tourism, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.
The meeting also focused on strengthening cooperation between the Centre and Nagaland to address local development requirements while supporting the Northeast’s broader growth.
