New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a major initiative to empanel Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other reputed technical institutions for independent proof checking of hydraulic studies and structural designs of major bridges across National Highway projects.
The move aims to significantly enhance safety, quality, and long-term durability of India’s expanding national highway network.
IITs and Top Institutions Join Hands with NHAI
According to NHAI, around 12 premier institutions, including:
- IIT Delhi
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Roorkee
- IIT Kharagpur
- and other leading technical institutes
have already expressed willingness to collaborate in this initiative.
The empanelment will create a structured national-level system for independent technical review of bridge designs before construction begins.

Focus on 100-Year-Design Life Bridges
The initiative is especially focused on major bridge structures designed for a service life of 100 years or more.
These bridges will undergo rigorous independent evaluation to ensure:
- Structural safety and stability
- Accuracy of engineering designs
- Reliability of construction methodologies
- Long-term durability and performance
Comprehensive Technical Review Process
Under the new framework, IITs and partner institutions will review multiple technical aspects, including:
- Structural design calculations
- Engineering drawings
- Geotechnical investigations
- Hydraulic studies
- Construction methodologies
This independent proof-checking system will act as an additional layer of quality assurance before project execution.
Uniform Quality Assurance Across All Highway Projects
The framework will be applicable across all new National Highway projects, regardless of the execution model.
This will ensure a standardized quality assurance mechanism across:
- Different project delivery formats
- Various construction modes
- Multiple executing agencies
NHAI aims to bring uniformity and consistency in engineering standards nationwide.
Enhancing Safety and Reducing Long-Term Risks
NHAI stated that the initiative will significantly improve:
- Structural safety of bridges
- Design reliability
- Engineering accuracy
- Long-term operational safety
- Risk reduction in infrastructure performance
The authority emphasized that independent academic scrutiny will help detect design issues early and improve overall project quality.
Alignment with Best Engineering Practices
The initiative aligns with NHAI’s broader goal of adopting world-class engineering standards and institutional mechanisms.
It also supports the development of a modern, future-ready National Highway network through stronger collaboration between government agencies and leading academic institutions.
By involving premier institutions like IITs in independent design verification, NHAI is taking a significant step toward improving the safety, durability, and reliability of India’s highway infrastructure. The initiative is expected to strengthen engineering standards and ensure long-term sustainability of major bridge projects across the country.
