New Delhi: NTPC Limited has invited international bids for the development of a 15 MW floating solar photovoltaic (PV) project integrated with a 60 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Tamarind Falls Reservoir in Mauritius. The project marks another step in the Indian power major’s overseas renewable energy activities, combining solar power generation with battery storage to support a more reliable electricity supply.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) tender has been issued on behalf of NTPC (Mauritius) Energy Limited. The proposed facility will combine floating solar technology with energy storage to improve the integration and availability of renewable electricity.
15 MW Floating Solar Plant to Feature 60 MWh Battery Storage
The proposed project will comprise a 15 MW floating solar PV plant and a battery energy storage system rated at 12 MW/60 MWh. The battery system will store electricity generated by the solar installation and help manage fluctuations in renewable power generation.
The grid-connected facility is designed to support more dependable electricity delivery by improving the flexibility of solar power generation. Battery storage can help balance variations in solar output and make stored electricity available when generation levels change. The EPC contractor will be responsible for the complete development of the project, covering design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, transportation, installation, testing and commissioning.
The integration of floating solar generation and battery storage is a central feature of the project, bringing together two technologies to support more flexible renewable energy supply.
NTPC Tender Includes Long-Term Maintenance Requirements
The tender includes post-commissioning maintenance obligations to support the facility’s operational performance and reliability over the long term.
The maintenance scope includes:
- Three years of operation and maintenance (O&M) for the floating solar power plant.
- An annual maintenance contract for critical equipment.
- A 12-year comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the battery energy storage system.
These provisions are intended to support the sustained operation of the solar and storage infrastructure after commissioning.
The tender also outlines financial requirements for participating bidders. These include an earnest money deposit (EMD) of ₹2 crore or its equivalent of US$207,600, along with contract performance security and additional bank guarantees for system integration.

Interested bidders will need to submit their proposals within the stipulated timeline and meet the tender’s technical, commercial and financial requirements.
Floating Solar and Battery Storage to Support Renewable Energy Integration
The proposed installation at Tamarind Falls Reservoir highlights the potential of combining floating solar technology with battery energy storage to strengthen renewable electricity systems. Floating solar plants use water surfaces for photovoltaic installations, offering an alternative to conventional ground-mounted solar projects. The approach can help utilise available reservoir areas for renewable power generation.
Battery energy storage systems complement solar installations by storing electricity and helping manage variations in generation. This can improve the flexibility of renewable power supply and support grid operations.
NTPC Expands Its International Renewable Energy Activities
The tender reflects the growing role of Indian public sector enterprises in developing renewable energy infrastructure in international markets.
Through NTPC (Mauritius) Energy Limited, NTPC is pursuing a project that combines solar generation and battery storage to support clean energy development in Mauritius.
The project will move forward through the bidding and evaluation process, followed by a contract award and subsequent execution. Its implementation will depend on the outcome of the tender and the completion of the required project milestones.
