New Delhi: The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has approved the premature repatriation of Sharmistha Maitra, a 2005-batch Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES) officer serving as Director in the Ministry of Defence, to her parent cadre on personal grounds.
According to an Office Memorandum dated November 5, 2026, the competent authority approved the proposal moved by the Ministry of Defence. The order also provides for an extended cooling-off period and directs Maitra to be relieved of her duties immediately and report to her parent cadre.
Who Is Sharmistha Maitra?
Sharmistha Maitra belongs to the 2005 batch of the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES), an organised Group ‘A’ Central Civil Service under the Ministry of Defence.
According to reports Maitra holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, followed by postgraduate studies in Arts and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil).
The service deals with the administration of cantonments and management of defence land across the country. IDES officers serve in the Defence Estates Organisation and its associated establishments.
Maitra was appointed Director in the Ministry of Defence under the Central Staffing Scheme in August 2020. She assumed the position from September 1, 2020, and was initially appointed for five years.
In July 2025, her central deputation tenure was extended by two years, taking it up to August 31, 2027, or until further orders. Her latest repatriation order has, however, curtailed this extended tenure.
Previous Roles and Administrative Experience
Before moving to the Ministry of Defence on central deputation, Maitra held assignments within the Defence Estates Organisation.
Her reported previous positions include:
- Deputy Director General: Served in the Directorate General of Defence Estates (DGDE), under the Ministry of Defence.
- Deputy Director, Eastern Command: Held a position in the Defence Estates establishment under the Eastern Command.
- Chief Executive Officer, Cantonment Board Jammu: Served in the civic and administrative leadership of the cantonment board.
Maitra has also served as Deputy Director General (Administration and Cantonments) in the Directorate General of Defence Estates, as reflected in official records from 2019.
What Does the Latest DoPT Order Say?
The November 5 memorandum contains the following key decisions:
- Premature repatriation: Maitra will return from the Ministry of Defence to her parent cadre.
- Grounds: The repatriation has been approved on personal grounds.
- Extended cooling-off: The order provides for an extended cooling-off period.
- Immediate relief: She is to be relieved of her current duties immediately and instructed to report to her parent cadre.
The development brings her central deputation as Director in the Ministry of Defence to an early end, ahead of the previously approved tenure ending in August 2027.
