New Delhi: NTPC’s Regional Learning Institute (RLI), Vindhyachal, has commenced the fourth batch of its two-month residential training programme on Wet Flue Gas Desulphurization (WFGD) for seven engineers from ESKOM, South Africa.
The programme, organised in association with NTPC’s International Business Department (IBD), aims to strengthen the growing partnership between NTPC and ESKOM in sustainable power generation while promoting technical knowledge exchange between India and South Africa.
Fourth Batch of WFGD Training Programme Begins
The latest batch includes seven ESKOM engineers who will undergo two months of residential training focused on WFGD technology.
The programme is designed to provide participants with comprehensive, practical exposure to various aspects of FGD systems, including:
- FGD erection and commissioning
- Operation and maintenance of WFGD systems
- Hands-on interaction with NTPC technical experts
- Safety practices and operational procedures
- Exposure to other power-generation technologies at Vindhyachal
The initiative is part of NTPC’s efforts to share its technical expertise and support international capacity building in cleaner power technologies.

Vindhyachal’s FGD Expertise Highlighted
Inaugurating the programme, Kishore Kumar Hota, Executive Director (Vindhyachal), highlighted the significance of Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station as the first NTPC station to have an FGD system.
He said the training would provide the participating engineers with end-to-end exposure to the erection, commissioning and operation of FGD systems.
The programme will allow ESKOM professionals to gain practical insights from NTPC’s operational experience and technical expertise.
NTPC Focuses on Safety and Technology Exposure
Manikyan Suresh, General Manager (O&M), emphasised NTPC’s strong focus on safety during the training programme.
He encouraged the participating engineers to explore the wider technological initiatives at Vindhyachal, including solar and hydro projects, alongside the WFGD training.
He also urged the engineers to make maximum use of hands-on interactions with NTPC experts during their stay.
Around 24 ESKOM Professionals Trained So Far
Dr Debasmita Tripathy, AGM (RLI), said around 24 ESKOM professionals have already been trained through the previous three batches of the programme.
She described the initiative as an important platform for:
- Knowledge exchange
- Professional excellence
- International capability building
- Strengthening India-South Africa cooperation
With the commencement of the fourth batch, the initiative continues to expand technical collaboration between NTPC and ESKOM.
NTPC-ESKOM Partnership Strengthened
Tapas Kumar Mazumdar, AGM (IBD), outlined the journey of the ESKOM-NTPC association and welcomed the fourth and final batch of the training programme.
The programme reflects the growing cooperation between the two organisations in the field of sustainable power generation and technical capability development. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Lal Bihari Prasad, DGM (IBD).
The initiative also reinforces RLI Vindhyachal’s role as a centre for international capability building, while showcasing NTPC’s expertise in cleaner power technologies.
India-South Africa Technical Cooperation
The WFGD training programme is aimed not only at technical learning but also at strengthening professional ties between India and South Africa. Through such initiatives, NTPC is sharing its operational experience and technological knowledge with international power-sector professionals, supporting greater cooperation in sustainable and cleaner power generation.
