New Delhi: Operation Sindoor has emerged as one of the most significant military achievements highlighted in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Annual Report 2025-26.

According to official information released by the Defence Ministry, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully used its S-400 air defence system to destroy a Pakistani special-mission aircraft from a distance of 314 km during Operation Sindoor. The report describes the engagement as the “Longest Surface-To-Air Kill” and highlights India’s advanced air-defence capabilities.

What Was Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor was launched after the April 22, 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people lost their lives.

On May 7, 2025, India carried out precision strikes against terrorist infrastructure located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Operation Sindoor: Conflict Expanded After Pakistani Response

Following the strikes, Pakistan responded with attacks on Indian military and civilian targets. The situation quickly developed into a four-day military confrontation before a ceasefire was announced on May 10, 2025.

Longest Surface-To-Air Kill: The 314-Km S-400 Strike

According to the Defence Ministry’s Annual Report 2025-26, an Indian Air Force S-400 unit successfully intercepted and destroyed a Pakistani special-mission aircraft from a distance of 314 km. The report describes this operation as the “Longest Surface-To-Air Kill” achieved during the conflict.

Why Operation Sindoor Is Significant

The Defence Ministry stated that the operation demonstrated India’s ability to detect, track and engage aerial threats at very long distances. The engagement challenged the belief that distance alone could provide safety from modern air-defence systems.

Radar Tracking Played A Key Role

According to the official report, Indian radar systems tracked the target continuously before the missile engagement. The long-range missile was then guided to its target through advanced command-and-control systems and radar support.

How India’s Air Defence Network Worked

The Defence Ministry highlighted the role of the Indigenous Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS). This system connected military and civilian surveillance sensors to create a common air picture for decision-makers.

Networked Operations Enhanced Accuracy

The IAF operated through Networked Tactical Nodes located across multiple locations. These systems helped identify, classify and track aerial threats in real time, improving operational effectiveness.

Combination Of Technologies Delivered Results

The Defence Ministry said the success of the S-400 engagement was based on:

  • Radar detection
  • Target tracking
  • Command-and-control coordination
  • Long-range missile interception capability

Together, these elements enabled the successful 314-km strike.

Pakistan’s Air Defence Infrastructure Was Also Targeted

The Defence Ministry reported that command-and-control centres at Chaklala and Murid were successfully targeted during the operation. These locations were considered important parts of Pakistan’s air-defence structure.

Strategic Importance Of Chaklala

Chaklala housed the headquarters of the Pakistan Air Force Air Defence Command. The facility played a central role in coordinating Pakistan’s air-defence operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Commended IAF Personnel

Following the operation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Air Force Station Adampur on May 12, 2025. During the visit, he praised IAF personnel for their professionalism, courage and operational success.

Gallantry Awards For Operation Sindoor

The Defence Ministry’s report stated that 219 Presidential Gallantry Awards were presented to Indian Air Force personnel on August 15, 2025. The awards recognized exceptional courage, dedication and service displayed during Operation Sindoor.

Strategic Impact Of Operation Sindoor

The operation showcased India’s growing ability to conduct integrated air-defence and offensive operations. It also highlighted the effectiveness of indigenous command-and-control systems working alongside advanced weapon platforms.

Message To Potential Adversaries

According to the Defence Ministry, the operation demonstrated that hostile aerial targets could be engaged even at extended ranges. The report concluded that no point in the air or on the ground was beyond the reach of IAF offensive capabilities during the operation.
