“Over 1,900 IAS, IPS, and IFS Posts Vacant in India,” Revealed Union Minister Jitendra Singh

The Minister emphasized that efforts are ongoing to fill these critical vacancies and strengthen administrative and governance systems across the country

Union Minister of State for Personnel, Mr. Jitendra Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha today that there are 1,316 IAS and 586 IPS officer vacancies, as of January 1st, 2024. Similarly, the Indian Forest Service (IFS) has 1,042 vacant positions.

  • IAS:
    • Total Sanctioned Strength: 6,858
    • In-Position Officers: 5,542
    • Vacancies: 1,316 (794 for direct recruits, 522 for promotions)
  • IPS:
    • Total Sanctioned Strength: 5,055
    • In-Position Officers: 4,469
    • Vacancies: 586 (209 for direct recruits, 377 for promotions)
  • IFS:
    • Total Sanctioned Strength: 3,193
    • In-Position Officers: 2,151
    • Vacancies: 1,042 (503 for direct recruits, 539 for promotions)

The recruitment of these officers is conducted through the annual Civil Services Examination (CSE) by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

    • IAS (2022):General: 75, OBC: 45, SC: 29, ST: 13
    • IPS (2022):General: 83, OBC: 53, SC: 31, ST: 13
    • IFS (2024):General: 43, OBC: 51, SC: 22, ST: 11
