Punjab: The education system in Punjab is undergoing a major transformation as the state government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, collaborates with the University of Turku, Finland, to introduce global best practices in teaching and learning.
The initiative aims to move classrooms away from traditional rote learning towards more interactive, child-centred, and participatory education methods.
Focus on Joyful and Interactive Learning
Under the initiative, teaching methods in Punjab schools are gradually shifting towards:
- Activity-based learning
- Play-based education for early childhood
- Student engagement through interactive methods
- Inclusive and participatory classroom practices
The programme is aligned with Punjab’s broader “Sikhya Kranti” education reform mission, aimed at strengthening foundational learning outcomes.
Train-the-Trainers Model to Scale Impact
A key feature of the initiative is its structured train-the-trainers model, designed to expand impact across the state.
- Nearly 300 teachers will be trained by May 2026
- Training is being conducted in Chandigarh and in Finnish cities like Turku and Rauma
- Master trainers will further train teachers across Punjab
This approach ensures large-scale capacity building in a systematic manner.
International Exposure and Teacher Development
Teachers participating in the programme have been exposed to:
- Classroom innovations in Finland
- Mentoring sessions with international experts
- School visits in advanced education systems
Bhagwant Mann stated that the collaboration ensures global pedagogical expertise is adapted to Punjab’s socio-cultural context rather than directly replicated.
Early Signs of Improved Classroom Engagement
Initial feedback from schools suggests positive changes, including:
- Higher student participation
- Increased classroom engagement
- Improved learning motivation
- More inclusive teaching environments
Teachers have also reported greater confidence in experimenting with new teaching methods tailored to student needs.
CM Bhagwant Mann’s Finland Visit
During his official visit to Finland, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited the Kukulo-Moikoinen Early Childhood Education and Care Centre, the University of Turku, and the Turku Teacher Training School.
He emphasized that the partnership is a long-term institutional effort aimed at strengthening early childhood and foundational education in Punjab.
Long-Term Vision for Education Reform
The programme, implemented through the State Council of Educational Research and Training under the Department of School Education, is designed as a sustainable reform model.
Key future plans include:
- Expanding train-the-trainers network
- Developing digital learning platforms
- Introducing blended learning systems
- Strengthening continuous teacher development
The collaboration between Punjab and the University of Turku marks a significant step in modernizing the state’s education system. By combining global teaching practices with local adaptation, the initiative aims to create a more engaging, inclusive, and effective learning environment for students across Punjab.
