To ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections in Punjab, the State Election Commission (SEC) has appointed 22 IAS officers as election observers for the upcoming municipal elections. These officers will be responsible for overseeing the elections in various districts across the state, ensuring that all procedures are followed in strict accordance with the law.
Five of the designated officers will be assigned to monitor elections in five Municipal Corporations (MCs), with one officer overseeing each MC. The remaining 17 officers will supervise the elections in Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats throughout Punjab.
An official spokesperson for the SEC disclosed that the officers have been instructed to reach their assigned districts by 11 AM on December 12, 2024, the final day for filing nominations. This will allow them to review and assess the arrangements and necessary activities in preparation for the election.
The observers will play a key role in monitoring various aspects of the election process. Their duties include overseeing law and order arrangements, investigating election-related complaints, ensuring the availability of election materials, supervising the commissioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and reviewing the training of polling staff. They will also ensure the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, monitor videography and CCTV arrangements, and maintain strict vigilance throughout the process.
The appointed observers will remain in their respective districts until the counting of votes is completed, guaranteeing continued oversight and transparency in the election process.
The SEC has urged the general public and election candidates to take note of these arrangements, which are designed to ensure the conduct of a smooth and transparent election process.
