Chandigarh: Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains has announced a large-scale development plan aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure in several municipal council areas surrounding the Tricity region. The announcement was made following a high-level review meeting held at the Municipal Bhawan, where officials reviewed ongoing civic works and future project timelines.
The initiative focuses on improving roads, water supply systems, and sewerage infrastructure across key towns including Kharar, Zirakpur, Derabassi, Nayagaon, Banur, Kurali, and Gharuan.
Over 250 Kilometres of Roads Under Construction
According to the minister, more than 250 kilometres of road construction work is currently underway across the seven municipal council areas. Along with road development, the government also plans to undertake beautification of major arterial routes to improve urban aesthetics and traffic experience.
Officials have been instructed to accelerate execution and ensure that priority roads in Banur, Kurali, Zirakpur, Kharar, Derabassi, Nayagaon, and Lalru begin construction within the next 15 days.

50 New Tubewells to Strengthen Drinking Water Supply
To address water supply challenges, the government has approved the installation of 50 new tubewells across the region. The distribution plan includes:
- 15 tubewells in Kharar
- 10 each in Zirakpur and Nayagaon
- 5 in Derabassi
- 4 in Lalru
- 3 in Banur
- 1 in Kurali
This expansion aims to improve access to clean drinking water and reduce dependency on existing overburdened sources.
Sewerage Cleaning and De-Silting Operations Intensified
Alongside water supply improvements, large-scale sewerage cleaning and de-silting operations are also being carried out across the affected urban areas. The initiative is expected to improve drainage efficiency and reduce waterlogging issues during the monsoon season.
Strict Timeline and Weekly Monitoring of Projects
Minister Harjot Singh Bains emphasized that delays in development projects will not be tolerated. He directed officials to ensure strict adherence to timelines, with all ongoing and upcoming works to be reviewed on a weekly basis.He reiterated that the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is committed to implementing a transparent, time-bound, and future-ready development model focused on sustainable urban growth.
Focus on Tricity-Linked Urban Growth
The development push is seen as a significant step toward strengthening infrastructure in fast-growing suburban belts around Chandigarh. These regions have witnessed rapid urbanization in recent years, increasing the demand for improved roads, water supply, and sanitation services. The government’s latest initiative aims to bridge infrastructure gaps and support planned urban expansion in these high-growth zones.
