Rajasthan Speaker Summons DGP Over Ex-BJP MLA’s Killing, Alleged Assault on RSS Pracharak

Jaipur: Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani has summoned Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, to the state Assembly to review the killing of former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana and allegations of assault against an Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak at Naraina police station.

During the meeting on Thursday, Devnani called for action to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and stressed that police enforcement must ensure that those committing crimes fear the law.

The intervention comes amid questions about the handling of a prolonged dispute linked to Bhadana’s death in Bharatpur district and allegations of mistreatment in police custody in a separate case.

DGP Asked to Review Two Cases

Devnani reviewed the progress of both cases with the police chief and emphasised the need for appropriate action.

The two matters involve different allegations and investigations:

  • Atar Singh Bhadana’s killing: The former BJP MLA died after an alleged attack during a dispute over a mining lease and the reopening of a stone-crushing unit in Bharatpur district.
  • Alleged assault on an RSS pracharak: Allegations of police misconduct have emerged in connection with an incident at Naraina police station.

The Speaker called for accountability and action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Former BJP MLA Killed Amid Stone-Crusher Dispute

Atar Singh Bhadana, a former MLA from Bayana, was attacked near Bhonda village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district on October 11.

The confrontation reportedly arose from a long-running dispute involving a mining lease, access to the site and the proposed reopening of a stone-crushing unit. Bhadana sustained serious injuries and died during treatment at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Hospital.

His associate, Gagan Sharma, was also seriously injured in the incident.

According to reports, villagers had opposed the mining and crusher operations, citing concerns over access to grazing land and the use of village land. The allegations surrounding the dispute and the circumstances of the fatal confrontation remain subject to investigation.

Rajasthan Government Promises Action in Bhadana Case

Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham said Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had taken the killing seriously and that those found responsible would face strict action.

Responding to demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, Bedham said the government’s responsibility was to ensure justice.

His remarks came amid criticism and questions over the handling of the dispute before the fatal incident.

The investigation into Bhadana’s death is separate from the allegations concerning police conduct at Naraina police station.

Allegations of Police Misconduct at Naraina Police Station

The second matter reviewed by Devnani concerns allegations that an RSS pracharak was mistreated at Naraina police station.

The allegations have raised questions about the conduct of police personnel and the treatment of individuals in custody. The National Human Rights Commission has also sought a report from Rajasthan authorities concerning the alleged incident, according to published reports.

The Speaker’s review of the case forms part of the wider call for accountability in both matters.

Speaker Stresses Accountability and Prevention

Devnani’s intervention comes as authorities face scrutiny over the handling of the two cases.

By summoning the DGP, the Speaker sought a review of the investigations and emphasised the need for appropriate police action. The cases concern separate incidents, but both have prompted questions about law enforcement and accountability in Rajasthan.
