New Delhi/Shimla: The Ministry of Power has extended the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN Limited to Mr. Bhupender Gupta, who is currently serving as CMD of NHPC Limited.
The extension will be effective from August 1, 2026, and will continue for three months, or until a regular full-time CMD is appointed, or until further orders are issued, whichever is earlier.
SJVN Limited informed the stock exchanges about the development on July 30, following the order issued by the Ministry of Power.
Bhupender Gupta to Continue as SJVN CMD on Additional Charge
Under the latest order, Mr. Bhupender Gupta will continue to hold the additional charge of SJVN CMD from August 1, 2026. The extension is aimed at ensuring continuity in the company’s leadership and providing operational oversight until a regular full-time CMD takes charge.
The additional charge will end upon the earliest of the following:
- Completion of three months from August 1, 2026.
- Appointment of a regular full-time CMD at SJVN.
- Issuance of further orders by the Ministry of Power.
Mr. Bhupender Gupta currently serves as the CMD of NHPC Limited. He is also the Chairman of NHDC Limited and Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Corporation Limited.

Bhupender Gupta’s Experience in the Power Sector
Mr. Bhupender Gupta has been serving as the CMD of NHPC Limited since September 4, 2025. He has more than 34 years of experience in the power sector, including over 31 years of experience in power Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management.
Before taking up his current responsibilities, Gupta worked with SJVN for around 12 years and was associated with the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project.
He has also held key positions and worked on major assignments associated with:
- REC Limited
- THDC India Limited (THDCIL)
- Hydropower projects in Bhutan
His extensive experience in the power sector is expected to support continuity in SJVN’s leadership during the interim period.
SJVN Confirms Regulatory and Board-Related Details
In its disclosure, SJVN confirmed that Mr. Bhupender Gupta is not related to any director on the company’s Board.
The company also stated that he is not debarred from holding the office of director by SEBI or any other statutory authority.
The extension of his additional charge is expected to ensure uninterrupted leadership and operational oversight at SJVN until a regular full-time CMD is appointed.
Leadership Continuity at SJVN
The Ministry of Power’s decision provides clarity on the leadership arrangement at SJVN for the coming months. With Gupta continuing to hold the additional CMD charge, the company will have an experienced power-sector professional overseeing its operations during the transition period.
The arrangement will remain in place for up to three months from August 1, 2026, unless a full-time CMD is appointed earlier or the Ministry issues further directions.
