Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s wait for a regular Director General of Police (DGP) is set to continue, with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) likely to defer the crucial empanelment meeting once again. The delay comes as the scheduled date clashes with polling for the ongoing Assembly elections, further pushing back the appointment process.
UPSC Meeting Likely to Be Deferred Again
The Empanelment Committee Meeting (ECM), scheduled for April 23, 2026, is expected to be postponed after the Tamil Nadu government informed the UPSC that its Chief Secretary and Home Secretary would be unable to attend due to polling commitments.
Official sources indicated that the UPSC is yet to formally communicate its decision, but a deferment appears inevitable given the circumstances.
Second Postponement in Ongoing Process
This marks the second delay in the empanelment process. The earlier ECM, scheduled for March 20, 2026, had also been postponed at the last minute, despite state officials reaching Delhi, due to the unavailability of certain Union government representatives.
The repeated deferments have significantly slowed down the process of appointing a full-time DGP/Head of Police Force (HoPF) for the state.
Election Schedule Complicates Appointment
The current delay is directly linked to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with polling coinciding with the proposed UPSC meeting date. The enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, which will remain in place until May 7, 2026, further limits administrative flexibility.
In the interim, the Election Commission of India appointed Sandeep Rai Rathore as the DGP/HoPF, replacing G. Venkatraman, who had been serving as acting DGP.
Supreme Court Deadline Missed
The delay comes despite a directive from the Supreme Court of India, which on February 12, 2026, had ordered that the process of appointing a regular DGP be completed within three weeks.
However, the timeline has not been met due to repeated postponements linked to administrative and logistical challenges.
Top Contenders in the Race
As per seniority, the leading contenders for the post include:
- Seema Agrawal
- Rajeev Kumar
- Sandeep Rai Rathore
The upcoming ECM, now expected to be held in May 2026, will finalise a panel of three officers, from which the Tamil Nadu government will appoint the regular DGP.
What Happens Next
Once the election process concludes and administrative normalcy returns, the UPSC is expected to announce a fresh date for the empanelment meeting. The committee will then assess the shortlisted officers based on seniority, service record, and experience before forwarding its recommendations.
UPSC Meeting
With back-to-back deferments and election-related constraints, Tamil Nadu’s wait for a regular DGP continues to stretch. The final decision now hinges on the rescheduling of the UPSC meeting, which is likely only after the completion of the electoral process.
