UP Defence Corridor Takes Shape as Kanpur Emerges as Major Manufacturing Hub

After nine years, the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor has moved from planning to production, with Kanpur emerging as its biggest defence manufacturing hub.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) is steadily emerging as a major defence manufacturing ecosystem, nine years after its launch. Developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the corridor now spans six nodes — Kanpur, Jhansi, Lucknow, Aligarh, Agra and Chitrakoot.

Kanpur has emerged as the leading hub, particularly for ammunition, small arms, defence textiles and protective equipment. The corridor is also creating new investment and employment opportunities while supporting India’s push for greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

₹40,000 Crore Investment Proposals

Around 2,095 hectares have been secured across the six nodes, with more than 1,140 hectares allotted to 65 companies.

Projects worth nearly ₹13,500 crore have moved into the implementation stage and are expected to generate around 15,300 direct jobs. Overall investment proposals across the corridor have reached approximately ₹39,500–40,000 crore, with Kanpur accounting for the largest share at around ₹13,000 crore.

Nine manufacturing units are already operational across Kanpur, Lucknow and Aligarh.

Kanpur Emerges as Ammunition Hub

Kanpur has witnessed some of the corridor’s most significant defence investments.

Adani Defence & Aerospace has invested nearly ₹4,000 crore in its ammunition manufacturing facility in the city. The company plans further expansion across about 250 acres in Hathipur.

The facility currently produces around 15 crore rounds of ammunition annually, with capacity expected to reach approximately 30 crore rounds by the end of 2026. Medium-calibre ammunition production is planned for 2027.

The company also plans to expand grenade production to 40 lakh units annually by 2027, with another 40 lakh units of capacity planned by 2029. AI-based inspection technology is being used for quality control.

Indigenous Small Arms and Defence Systems

Kanpur’s defence ecosystem is expanding beyond ammunition. Indigenous weapons such as the Abhay Rifle, capable of using 5.56 mm and 9 mm ammunition, are being manufactured in the city.

The Prahar Light Machine Gun has also received a major order from the Indian Army, highlighting the growing role of private manufacturing in supplying indigenous defence equipment.

Other Nodes Expand Defence Manufacturing

The corridor’s development extends beyond Kanpur.

Lucknow has an operational BrahMos Aerospace facility focused on next-generation missile systems. Other units across the corridor are working on electronic warfare systems, precision components, ballistic materials, defence textiles and safety equipment.

The corridor’s connectivity, industrial infrastructure and policy support have helped companies move projects from investment proposals to actual manufacturing.

₹25,000 Crore More Investment Planned

The Uttar Pradesh government targets ₹25,000 crore in new investment over five years, potentially creating 20,000–22,000 direct jobs. New testing facilities for drones, communications and specialised materials could expand the UP Defence Industrial Corridor into higher-value defence production.

With Kanpur leading ammunition and small-arms manufacturing, the corridor is strengthening UP’s industrial base and supporting India’s defence self-reliance.
