Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh and Japan’s Yamanashi prefecture discussed cooperation in green hydrogen technology, production, research and investment at the UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026 held at Taj Hotel, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.
The meeting brought together Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister A.K. Sharma, senior officials from the Energy Department and representatives from Japan’s Yamanashi prefecture, led by Governor Kotaro Nagasaki.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in green hydrogen and included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two sides.
Green Hydrogen Seen as Key Clean Energy Focus
A.K. Sharma said green hydrogen would be an important component of the future clean energy economy.
He said promoting its production and use in Uttar Pradesh could support energy security and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
According to the minister, green hydrogen can be used in sectors where reducing carbon emissions is challenging, including:
- Industrial heat applications
- Heavy commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks
- Fertiliser manufacturing
- Other hard-to-decarbonise sectors
Yamanashi Presents Power-to-Gas Technology
The Japanese delegation presented the Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology developed in Yamanashi.
The technology uses renewable energy to produce green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water.
During the meeting, Yamanashi Hydrogen Company (YHC) and Kanadevia Corporation proposed establishing a high-capacity pilot project in Uttar Pradesh.
Proposed Project Timeline
The proposal includes the following targets:
- Feasibility study: To be completed by February 2027
- Commercialisation: Targeted to move forward by March 2027
- Technology: Renewable-energy-based Power-to-Gas system
- Focus: Green hydrogen production
The proposed pilot project is part of the cooperation discussed between Uttar Pradesh and the Yamanashi delegation during the investment meet.
Uttar Pradesh Sets 1 MM TPA Green Hydrogen Target
The Uttar Pradesh government has set a target of producing 1 million metric tonnes per annum (1 MM TPA) of green hydrogen in the state.
To work towards the target, the state government is promoting:
- Investment in green hydrogen projects
- Technological innovation
- Private-sector participation
- Research and development in the sector
The UP-Japan Investment Meet provided a platform for discussions on technology cooperation and investment opportunities linked to the state’s green hydrogen ambitions.
