LUCKNOW/NOIDA: In the aftermath of violent labour unrest in Noida, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an interim hike of approximately 21% in minimum wages for workers across the state. The decision was taken late Monday night following recommendations of a high-powered committee constituted to address the issue.

The revised wage structure will come into effect from April 1, 2026, and aims to provide immediate relief to workers while the government works on a long-term wage revision framework through a proposed Wage Board.

Decision Follows Days of Protests and Violence in Noida

The announcement comes after four days of labour agitation in Noida, which turned violent on Monday. Workers reportedly engaged in widespread protests, leading to large-scale disruption in industrial areas.

According to reports, the unrest escalated significantly, with incidents of vandalism, arson, and road blockades across Noida and Greater Noida. The situation prompted the state administration to issue a statewide alert.

Over 60 individuals were arrested, while around 250 others were detained in connection with the violence. Several police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector, were also injured during clashes.

Wage Hike Announced After Committee Recommendation

The state government stated that the interim wage revision was approved based on recommendations from a committee formed under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Officials clarified that the hike is interim in nature, and a permanent solution will be worked out later through a structured wage board mechanism.

The government also dismissed circulating social media claims that monthly wages had been raised to ₹20,000, calling them “false and misleading.”

Revised Minimum Wage Structure in Uttar Pradesh

The new interim wage rates vary across regions and skill categories

Gautam Buddha Nagar & Ghaziabad

  • Unskilled: ₹11,313 → ₹13,690
  • Semi-skilled: ₹12,445 → ₹15,059
  • Skilled: ₹13,940 → ₹16,868

Other Municipal Corporation Areas

  • Unskilled: ₹13,006
  • Semi-skilled: ₹14,306
  • Skilled: ₹16,025

The increase ranges between ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 per month, depending on skill category and region.

Category-Wise Interim Wage Hike Explained

The government has divided the revised wage structure into three categories:

  • Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad (industrial hubs)
  • Municipal corporation areas
  • Remaining districts of Uttar Pradesh

The revised structure is designed to address regional disparities and industrial wage demands.

Major Unrest in Noida: How the Situation Escalated

The labour agitation in Noida escalated sharply on Monday when workers gathered at industrial units, including a company in Phase-2, and began protests that quickly turned violent.

Reports indicate:

  • Around 400 companies were vandalised or forced shut down
  • Nearly 1,000 vehicles were damaged or set on fire
  • Police vehicles were also attacked and torched
  • Stones were pelted at the Sector-63 police station
  • Tear gas was used to disperse crowds

The unrest spread to nearby regions including Greater Noida, Faridabad, Palwal, Lucknow, and Bulandshahr, triggering widespread concern.

Traffic movement was severely disrupted, with long jams reported between Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Noida.

Law and Order Response

Police have intensified action against rioters, carrying out arrests and detentions across affected areas. Security has been tightened in industrial zones, and surveillance has been increased to prevent further escalation.

Authorities said that the situation is gradually being brought under control, though monitoring continues across sensitive zones.

Government’s Stand

The Uttar Pradesh government has stated that the interim wage hike is aimed at addressing worker grievances and restoring industrial peace, while ensuring that long-term reforms are implemented through structured dialogue.

Officials also reiterated that misinformation regarding wage announcements is being actively monitored and countered.

Reform Framework

The decision to increase minimum wages marks a significant policy response to the recent unrest in Noida. While the immediate objective is to pacify labour tensions, the government is expected to work on a broader wage reform framework in the coming months to ensure long-term stability in the industrial workforce.
