New Delhi: In a major technological upgrade aimed at safeguarding the credibility of one of India’s most prestigious examinations, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has successfully implemented a real-time face authentication system during the Civil Services Examination (Preliminary) 2026 and Indian Forest Service (Preliminary) Examination 2026.
The initiative, introduced to eliminate impersonation and strengthen examination integrity, enabled live verification of candidates at examination centres across the country. According to the Commission, the technology ensured that the individual appearing for the examination was the same person who had uploaded their photograph while submitting the online application form.
The successful nationwide deployment marks a significant milestone in the use of digital technologies for conducting large-scale public examinations and reflects UPSC’s commitment to transparency, fairness and innovation.
Real-Time Face Authentication Implemented at 2,072 Examination Centres
UPSC carried out the face authentication exercise across 2,072 examination venues spread throughout the country during the recently conducted Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026.
The system was designed to authenticate candidates in real time before they were permitted to enter examination halls. Invigilators used a mobile-phone-based application to verify candidates instantly, significantly reducing the possibility of impersonation and other examination malpractices.
The face authentication solution was developed by UPSC with technical support from the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

How the Face Authentication System Worked
As part of the newly introduced protocol, every candidate was required to undergo face authentication before entering the examination hall.
The process compared the candidate’s live facial image with the photograph uploaded during the online application process. Only after successful verification was the candidate permitted entry into the examination venue.
To ensure uniform implementation across the country, UPSC developed a comprehensive business process and detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which were shared with state governments, district administrations and examination centres.
The Commission also organized multiple rounds of training for invigilators to ensure smooth execution of the authentication process on examination day.
No Expensive Hardware Required
One of the most notable features of the system was its cost-effective design.
Unlike many biometric verification systems that require specialized equipment, the UPSC solution operated on ordinary Android smartphones. Invigilators used their own mobile phones to carry out candidate verification, eliminating the need for large-scale procurement of hardware.
This significantly reduced implementation costs while also simplifying logistics for the Commission.
Officials noted that the approach demonstrated how existing digital infrastructure can be leveraged effectively for secure and scalable public service delivery.
Authentication Completed Within Seconds
Another key highlight of the initiative was the speed of verification.
According to UPSC, the average face authentication process for a candidate took only 6 to 8 seconds, ensuring smooth movement of candidates into examination centres and preventing long queues outside venues.
The rapid verification process proved crucial given the massive scale of the examination, which attracts lakhs of aspirants from across the country each year.
More Than 7,000 Invigilators Used the System Simultaneously
The scalability of the technology was tested on an unprecedented scale during the Civil Services Preliminary Examination.
UPSC revealed that more than 7,000 invigilators used the application simultaneously across the country. During peak entry hours, the platform successfully processed nearly 12,000 face authentications per minute, demonstrating its ability to handle large volumes of candidate verification without disruption.
The performance of the system is being viewed as a major achievement in digital governance and examination management.
UPSC Chairman Highlights Success of Initiative
Speaking about the implementation, UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar described the initiative as an important step towards ensuring impersonation-free examinations.
He stated that while the technology itself was developed in-house with support from NeGD, the larger challenge was deploying the system at a national scale within a limited timeframe.
“This is a new step taken by UPSC to ensure impersonation-free exams. The technology is fully developed in-house with help of NeGD. However, the challenge also lay in deploying the solution at scale, leveraging the existing invigilation workforce for face authentication, training them, and accomplishing all this within a short span of time. UPSC, NeGD and MeitY teams have done a great job in developing and implementing this solution successfully on such a large scale with nearly 5.5 lakh candidates across 2000-plus venues,” Dr. Kumar said.
Verification Conducted for Nearly 5.5 Lakh Candidates
The scale of the operation can be gauged from the fact that the authentication system was deployed for approximately 5.5 lakh candidates who appeared for the examination across India.
Managing such a large verification exercise in real time while maintaining accuracy and speed highlights the growing role of digital technologies in modern examination systems.
Officials believe the successful implementation could serve as a model for other competitive examinations conducted by government agencies and public institutions.
A Major Step Towards Fair and Transparent Examinations
The introduction of face authentication represents UPSC’s latest effort to strengthen trust in the examination process.
By ensuring that only genuine candidates are allowed to appear for examinations, the Commission aims to eliminate impersonation, improve security and enhance fairness for lakhs of aspirants competing for civil services positions.
The successful nationwide deployment of the technology underscores the Commission’s commitment to adopting innovative digital solutions while maintaining the highest standards of examination integrity.
With the Civil Services Examination regarded as one of India’s most competitive recruitment processes, the face authentication initiative is expected to play an important role in preserving the credibility and transparency of the selection system in the years ahead.
