Nagpur: Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CURE International India Trust to launch an initiative aimed at eliminating disability caused by clubfoot among children in Nagpur district, Maharashtra.
The programme, titled “Elimination of Disability from Clubfoot in Children in Association with Government Healthcare System,” has been launched under WCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
The initiative focuses on early identification, treatment and complete rehabilitation of 100 children born with clubfoot, with the objective of improving access to specialised healthcare.
100 Children to Receive Free Clubfoot Rehabilitation
Under the project, 100 children with clubfoot in Nagpur district will be identified and provided comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation support. The programme will use the globally recognised Ponseti Method, a non-surgical approach for treating clubfoot through early clinical intervention.
The treatment will include:
- Early identification and clinical assessment
- Manipulation and casting
- Minor procedures, where required
- Provision of Foot Abduction Braces (FABs)
- Follow-up support to help prevent relapse
The Foot Abduction Braces will be provided completely free of cost, helping ensure that financial constraints do not prevent children from receiving the required post-treatment support.

Partnership to Work With Government Healthcare System
The initiative will be implemented in association with the government healthcare system, creating a coordinated approach to identifying and treating children with clubfoot.The partnership aims to strengthen access to specialised care while supporting long-term rehabilitation and follow-up.
By focusing on early intervention and continued care, the programme seeks to reduce the risk of disability and improve the quality of life of affected children.
MoU Signed in Presence of WCL Leadership
The MoU was signed in the presence of Mr. Bikram Ghosh, Director (Finance & HR), WCL.The agreement was formally signed by Mr. Lalit Prakash Tirkey, General Manager (CSR), WCL, and Sri Santosh George, Director, CURE India.
The initiative is being undertaken under the leadership of Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande, CMD, WCL, and reflects the company’s focus on expanding inclusive healthcare access through CSR interventions.
WCL Focuses on Inclusive Healthcare and Disability Care
The initiative goes beyond medical treatment by seeking to address the social challenges associated with childhood disability.
WCL plans to support community awareness campaigns aimed at reducing social stigma surrounding clubfoot and disability.
The company also aims to contribute towards establishing Nagpur as a sustainable and replicable public model for disability care, which could potentially support similar interventions across the state.
CSR Initiative Aims to Create Long-Term Social Impact
Through its partnership with CURE India, WCL is focusing on early healthcare intervention, rehabilitation and community-level awareness. The programme is expected to strengthen access to specialised clubfoot care for children while promoting a more inclusive approach to disability management.
The initiative further reflects WCL’s efforts to use its CSR programmes to create meaningful and sustainable social impact in communities.
