Western Coalfields Signs MoU for Bamboo Plantation on 28 Hectares of Reclaimed Mine Land in Maharashtra

WCL and Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board expand green mining initiative as total commercial bamboo plantation area crosses 121 hectares with focus on sustainability and revenue diversification.

Nagpur: Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has signed its fourth Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board (MBDB) to promote sustainable land use and environmental restoration through commercial bamboo plantations.

Under the agreement, WCL will develop a bamboo plantation project across 28 hectares of reclaimed mine land at the Dhupatala Opencast Mine in Ballarpur Area, Maharashtra. The initiative is part of WCL’s ongoing efforts to transform mined-out areas into productive green assets while creating sustainable revenue opportunities.

WCL Expands Commercial Bamboo Plantation Initiative

With the latest MoU, the total area under commercial bamboo plantation projects across WCL has increased to more than 121 hectares.

The project will be implemented over a period of 15 years, with an initial investment of approximately ₹2.57 crore.

According to WCL, the plantation is expected to start generating financial returns from the eighth year onwards, making it a long-term sustainable investment that combines environmental conservation with business diversification.

MoU Strengthens Sustainable Mining Goals

The bamboo plantation initiative reflects WCL’s commitment towards responsible mining practices and ecological restoration.

By converting reclaimed mining areas into green zones, the project aims to support:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • Carbon sequestration
  • Climate resilience
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Restoration of mined-out land
  • Sustainable income generation

The initiative also supports WCL’s strategy of developing alternative revenue sources beyond traditional coal operations.

Senior Officials Attend MoU Signing Ceremony

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both Western Coalfields Limited and Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board.

Key officials present during the event included:

  • Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Western Coalfields Limited
  • Mr. Bikram Ghosh, Director (Finance & Human Resources), WCL
  • Mr. S. S. Paranjape, Director (Technical – Projects & Planning), WCL
  • Mr. Hrishikesh Ranjan, Managing Director, Maharashtra Bamboo Development Board

The participation of senior leadership highlighted the importance of the partnership in advancing green rehabilitation and sustainable land management initiatives.

Bamboo Plantation to Generate Environmental and Social Benefits

The commercial bamboo plantation project is expected to provide multiple benefits for the environment and local communities.

Apart from improving green cover on reclaimed mining land, the project will contribute to:

  • Reduction of carbon footprint through increased carbon absorption
  • Protection and enhancement of biodiversity
  • Development of eco-friendly land use models
  • Creation of employment opportunities for nearby communities
  • Strengthening of sustainable business practices

The initiative represents a balance between mining operations, environmental responsibility, and long-term economic development.
